Is SANParks a designated tourist trap?

This. Every single tourist attraction prices itself for foreign visitors with an advantageous exchange rate. This means locals are priced out entirely. We are not wanted. Prices do not cater for locals. Fix that and the petrol price and the state of the roads and the crime and maybe...

Orgs like Sanparks and CapeNature have countless of cheap reserves and options.

We used to go to a lodge in the KnP, R500 per person per night. Now? R1300. GG. This increase was in a span over 3/4-years.

And government hasn't had a hand in our present economic situation (inflation, weak rand, economic slowdown, decline in purchasing power etc)? This was part of my argument. Aside from our tourist destinations being geared towards foreigners, we just can't spend money like we used to because the people in charge keep screwing us over by ensuring our rands get us less and less.

That makes it one of the few affordable holidays around specially the kruger.

We have considered making our way there this year for 10 days.. Moz won.


Start catering to local tourists or stop complaining we will spend our money somewhere we find value for money.

I say potato you say potato - tourist 'attractions' are 'traps'. Overpriced, of little or no interest to locals who can't afford them anyway, filled with cheaply made trashy momentos.

SANParks, on the whole, doesn't market itself that way.

oh come on a SANParks pass is R270 pp pa (or was the last time I looked) how in the world is that pricing itself for foreign currency? It gets you into every park for free for an entire year. You still have to pay for accommodation but as a day visitor - so very worth it.

I have no idea what the issue is. The OP was about how locals do not utilize local tourist spots. Local TOURIST spots are not priced for locals but are priced for foreign cash with a highly advantageous exchange rate. In general places that over-price themselves JUST for tourists are referred to as tourist traps.

SANParks does not attract more tourists than locals, every time I've been to a local park, it's been largely occupied by locals and services are not priced insanely high just for foreign tourists ... ipso facto SANparks is not a tourist trap.
