Tourism Minister Tokozile Xasa has stressed the importance of domestic tourism to strengthen the sector.

Xasa says that not enough locals are exploring holiday destinations in South Africa.

She addressed delegates at the media launch of the 2017 Tourism Month in Mpumalanga on Wednesday night.

Ahead of tourism month in September, Minister Xasa has launched the event under the theme: Sustainable Tourism for Development.

She says that more South Africans should come on board to boost the sector.

“We want South Africans to find a new appreciation for their country while making an economic contribution that literally changes and uplifts the lives of the entire communities.”

Xasa also elaborated on the economic benefits of tourism.

“Our efforts are limitless in ensuring that we unleash the potential that is there.”

The department is also trying to boost travel to less popular destinations in the country.

Yup, we were in Mpumalanga at the beginning of this month.
A lot of the attractions now charge, but normally it's like R10 a car. Happy to pay that for parking, security guard, clean toilets etc. But R50 a head? fokoff.

Yes Minister. Except locals don't want us and have priced the South African well out of the idea of even turning up. They want dollars and Euros and lots of them.
SAA subsidiary airlines charge prices literally only foreigners can afford and have done it for decades. Have you noticed?
Majority of us can't afford to make ends meet each month never mind holiday in our own country.

Went roadtripping through some parts of EC and yes, it's awesome, but there where some dodge ass places we drove through as well.

Really? A crap load of people in my circles go camping on a weekly basis. I actually think it's becoming more and more popular. Social media platforms like Instagram has a definite effect on outdoors.

This is why I camp and take my own food with. Last time I ate at manyane Resort it was R175 per person just for the meal excluding drinks...
