Not just SA

Yet another American ISP is toying with the idea of a ridiculously low bandwidth cap
There's the difference. They're considering it - we're suffering from it.

They also have affordable alternatives - something we clearly dont have.
The Reg sees no problem with bandwidth caps - as long as they're reasonable. And a 5GB limit is not.
I wonder what they would think of Telkom's 3gb caps.

I still can't understand some people trying to justify Telscums ridiculous caps and prices ..... boggles my mind

Yes sir. Reasonable caps I would not have a problem with. But 1GB cap on a 4mb line. Jesus this is robbery!

As an employee of the company who is imposing these caps on us your intention must be to justify them.

Don't be an 4rse. I read the article on the register and posted it here just to indicate that we are not the only ones with caps. How the hell is that justifying what Telkom does??

Sometimes people on these forums just like to cause **** for the sake of it.

Not trying to justify, just indicating that we are not the only country with caps.
There is a HUGE difference in the cap though and also pricing.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/16/att_mulls_bandwidth_caps_too/
new customers to choose a monthly bandwidth cap of 5-, 20-, or 40GB. Pricing plans range from $29.95 a month for a 5GB cap and 768kbps download speeds to $54.90 for a 40GB cap at 15mbps, and anyone who exceeds their cap is charged an extra $1 per gigabyte.

and http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/05/07/comcast_mulls_bandwidth_cap/
America's second largest ISP is mulling a plan that would cap user downloads at 250GB a month. Under the plan, users would not be penalized if they crossed that 250GB threshold once during a 12-month period, but if they did it again, they'd be charged $15 for every 10GB beyond the magic number.

Unfortunately the situations are not comparable so the article has little relevance to our situation.

Never disputed this. Why does everyone think that I am trying to??
Well because it desputes your threads subject line..

We all agree that it is not only SA with caps, Certain universities overseas have been doing it for years.. but its is only SA with crappy caps

I just had a good laugh at this thread.

Why is everyone missing the point?

All he did was post to let us all know that it is not only SA who cap, simple, simple.

Dispute ... not despute ... :P

? "Not just SA" What should the subject have said??
How you come to that conclusion is beyond me...

Geez you okes are edgy ...

Whats the point of this thread?

Yeah, we know we have crap internet, so does Zimbabwe or Botswana or Angola etc.

American or UK internet is still MILES better

A point we all know to well.... All we did was point out that there is a difference in the caps... and not a small one at that

True, true.

There is no comparison in the caps and I'm sure in the cost of the line.

Dispute ... not despute ... :P
So sue me. the grammer/spelling ninja thread is in the OT section.

The thread could have read.. "other countries are also now contemplating imposing caps."

Just as you say we are edgy, You yourself carefully choose the one article that mentioned the 5gig cap. While the others would of told the same story, but of course would also of pointed straight to the unfair caps we have to endure. Its easy to try get peoples backs up when you speak in half truths

Let's hope it does. The Reg sees no problem with bandwidth caps - as long as they're reasonable. And a 5GB limit is not. As ISP tilter Robb Topolski points out, you could consume a full 32GB a month with a 56Kbps modem.

this made me smile a bit.... perhaps it might be worth paying for 5 analogue lines, dialing up with bonded connections and then enjoy reaping in the benefits of a high usage cap at low speeds :)

If I hit 5GB will my service be interrupted?
No. Your service will not be interrupted at 5Gb. You will continue to use our High Speed Internet service without disruption.

if only our caps were enforced like this

That would only work in the USA where local is free in certain places.. Try that here, and you will be looking at a phone bill from hell.
