The other half of your question seems to be querying something that you could very well easily test yourself.
How so? I only have one cell phone, and if I send a message to myself and don't receive it, that doesn't tell me whether I'm doing something wrong or 'own number' messages are not sent.

I stay on my own, my family live in Randburg, and the only friend close enough now is not at home.

When I was playing around with AT commands for modems, I also found that I could not send to own number. But since I was using a modem with its own card I just sent to my normal MSISDN.
I've just changed to MTN and I also immediately received a message I sent using AT+CMGS.
