Edit: When I was in Paris (in 1990) there is one location where you can get 4 domes in the same telephoto image...

Try a viewpoint from further away, and on the other side of the river, with a long lens.

But wherever you take that photo, Les Invalides cannot be to the left of the Eiffel Tower ?


You would have to be so far to the right for that to happen - you could not include that view of Notre Dame ...

Probably accidental fire from maintenance work (blowtorches on lead roof sheeting).

But wherever you take that photo, Les Invalides cannot be to the left of the Eiffel Tower ?

You would have to be so far to the right for that to happen - you could not include that view of Notre Dame ...

Actually it perfectly matches this view from Google Earth Earth!

Architects working on preserving Notre-Dame are rushing to cover the cathedral before rain can cause further damage.

Showers and even possible thunderstorms are forecast for the French capital on Tuesday evening.

The cathedral's vault, which partly collapsed in the fire, is already partly waterlogged after fire-fighting efforts.

Architects fear that heavy rainfall could result in further collapse.

The chief architect of Notre-Dame , Philippe Villeneuve, told French broadcaster BFMTV that erecting an emergency tarpaulin was "the highest priority".

"The beams are there, the tarpaulin is arriving. The climbers, since it will be climbers who will do that, and the scaffolders, are ready," he said.

There are already plans to erect a large, purpose-built "umbrella" on the roof of the landmark, which will have its own peak and protect the structure while reconstruction takes place.

But the umbrella is not ready - and the threat of impending rain is too serious to wait, with even heavier rain forecast for Thursday.

Design submissions for the restoration of Notre Dame Cathedral include a proposal for a glasshouse to be built in place of the old, wooden roof.

Parts of the original structure were destroyed in a fire earlier in April, prompting the French prime minister, Eduoard Phillipe, to invite architects to design a replacement that is “adapted to the techniques and challenges of our era".

In response, Paris based architects Studio NAB submitted a design that is adapted to perhaps the greatest challenge of our era: climate change.

The proposed roof would be built of glass and its exterior would follow the shape of the previous one. However where there was once a tangle of wooden support beams inside, there would be rows of trees and flowers.

The spire too would be replaced with a green alternative. Inspired by the three beehives that survived the fire, the new spire would serve as an apiary, housing dozens of hives.

I'm in two minds about this - I don't find it in any way unacceptable but the traditionalist says maybe as much like the original as possible.

The reason Notre Dame is iconic is because of its age and original construction. Building that greenhouse design is like restoring a Michaelangelo Sistene chapel dome painting after a fire by not redoing the original but painting grafiti done by Hip street artists.

The more I think about it the more I think that the idea of "modernising" a cultural icon like Notre Dame is indicative of a sick culture. You're missing the significance of the damn thing if you think it can be made into something else and mean anything.
