Hi all,

This is my first post.

I am considering getting a Novatel MC950D cash from Vodacom. My first choice is actually a Huawei E272 but there are none in stock.

The Huawei E172 is not good enough because it does not have Diversity and Equalizers but the Novatel MC950D and the Huawei E272 does have this. The diversity and Equalizers boost signal quality.

The problem is that the Novatel is network locked. I would like to try the new 3G services from Telkom cause it is cheaper than Vodacom and switch between the two occasionally.

Is there anyway to unlock or upgrade the firmware on the Novatel MC950D ?

Alternatively does anyone know where there is stock of the Huawei E272 in Gauteng ?

TIA

What makes you believe the Novatel is network locked? Vodacom (and other providers for that matter) are not allowed to sell network locked devices.

The guy at Vodashop said so. He said I can only use their SIM card. Does anyone have the Novatel with the Vodafone branding on it ? Is it locked ?

It won't be locked. When you pick up the modem, get a name and number and I'll call them and set them straight.

People often get confused with the dashboard (VMC) that won't (out-of-the-box) let you connect to a different network.

But obviously, you'll use their software in any case.
