Novatel Merlin U630 doesnt work !!!!!!!!1

Hope somebody can assist me with a very frustating problem.

Sceniro :

Data card - Novatel Wireless Merlin u630 PCMCIA
OS - WinXP

Problem - The data card will not detect correctly in device manager using both Version 7 and 9 of the vodacom dashboard.In version 7 , device manager shows an exclamation mark next to the data card com port.Version 9 of the software detects and finds the data card correctly but gives a buffer overflow error.

Ive tested the card on another laptop using version 7 of the dashboard and it works correctly ( plug in play ).

Now i think the reason its not working is because i plugged the datacard into the laptop 1st before installing the software.Is there a way to fix this problem.

You should get an error number (10, 12, 28, etc.) on the exclamation mark. What is the number?
 
Is there a way to remove anything and start afresh.Maybe remove registry entries ? Spoke with a guy and he had a similar problem.Someone from vodacom helped him remove all traces of the drivers and managed to get it fixed.

KNOWN LAPTOPS MODELS AFFECTED:

• HP Compaq --- NX9105
• iQon --- 1.8 Notebook 8170
• Toshiba --- Satelite 3000

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
The Merlin is installed as a multifunction device. It occupies one device location on its bus, but has more than one function. Each function is associated with a driver that will service that operation.

Installation of the Merlin will fail if one of the functions is not properly initialized. Windows Device Manager will display an error with either the Modem or Port device. Error code 10 appears in the properties of the problem device, indicated by an exclamation mark.

To view this, follow steps below.
1. Insert the Merlin into the PC card slot.
2. Go to Device Manager. Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.
3. Expand the Modems, the Multifunction adapters and the Ports category.

CAUSE:
This problem occurs because Windows resource allocation is not properly achieved.

SOLUTION:
There are three possible solutions:
First, perform an update driver, from Device Manager just incase during the initial installation Windows did not install the drivers properly.
1. Insert the Merlin into the PC card slot.
2. Go to Device Manager. Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.
3. Expand the Modems, Multifunction adapters and Ports category.
4. Select the Novatel Wireless UMTS Modem Parent under the Multifunction adapters category.
5. Right click and choose update driver from the available menu.
6. Choose install the software automatically (recommended) from Windows Hardware Wizard.

The second solution is to manually assign resources to the Parent device
1. Insert the Merlin into the PC card slot.
2. Go to Device Manager. Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager.
3. Expand the Modems, the Multifunction adapters and the Ports category.
4. Select the Novatel Wireless UMTS Modem Parent under the Multifunction adapters category.
5. Right click and choose properties from the available menu.
6. Choose the resources tab.
7. Uncheck “Use automatic settings” to manually change the resource settings.
8. In the “Settings based on” drop down menu, choose a configuration that will eliminate the
error code. Usually, configuration 0004 or 0005 will work.
9. Choose OK and YES to further dialog windows.
10. Verify that there are no markings on Modems, Multifunction adapters or Port devices in Device Manager.

If this is not successful, the third possible solution is to contact your laptop manufacturer to Update the BIOS of the PC.
 
The problem is related to the virtual COM Port , so i will try manually assigning resources to the device.

It fixes the problem you describe on Vista, so might work for you as well.

Sorry to ask a again, this is for my cousin's laptap that he asked me to help with.
I know zip about laptops or 3g.

Which of these 2 work?

This one has the right card, but not for vista.

Both should work.
 
IMO use the 9.2 version of VMC since it will include drivers for the U630 and many other modems.
 
I can't install the u630 from the latest version of VMC. Vista does not get any drivers for it.
