I think the spyware is more signature related, basically building analytics around the drive's use, obviously capturing key data, but it's not like they are downloading all the data. Profiling is their game...

But that's not true.

The effected harddrives was not shipped to SA.

It's on the news. I left home shortly after my previous response so it will probably still be on skynews and CNN where they explicitly stated the countries it was shipped too.

You think the HDD makers even know which batches on the production line are scheduled for which geographies? Saying one thing is easy. I've been through a major HDD plant, and it seems pretty obvious to anyone who knows how the stuff is made that special segregated batches just aren't done. Not even doable, I suspect.

Kaspersky said it found personal computers in 30 countries infected with one or more of the spying programs, with the most infections seen in Iran, followed by Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Mali, Syria, Yemen and Algeria. The targets included government and military institutions, telecommunication companies, banks, energy companies, nuclear researchers, media, and Islamic activists, Kaspersky said.
