I cannot boot windows- thanks to Eskom's power cut today !
I tried repairing with XP cd but no luck.
I tried the following many times as well but still nothing.

1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
I cannot go past this step cos when I select the one I want to fix nothing happens.
Is there anyone in Jhb who can sort this out for me urgently- willing to bring it in and pay a reasonable fee.

go upto step 3, but press enter instead of "R", once you do that it will give another option to repair windows.

You have to use the same windows version cd that's currently installed on the pc.

Where you based? I will be at a client in Sandton today, you can bring it to me and I can take a look?

Try disconnecting your hdd's and plug them in one by one. Had the same problem a while back, but dont know how I got it working again.

This isn't a cause of a power failure. It's the last boot loader skin or skinning app for XP that you loaded, remember?

Use your Tune Up Utilities or get a program to restore your default ntoskernel and it would be fine.

Stay away from those apps, it's the devil.

edit: you say you can't boot, is this a BSOD?

Damaged boot.ini file? If the hard drive path/partition specify in this file is incorrect/non-existent, your PC will have this ntoskrnl.exe error.

guys ...I did not load any skins or anything. It was the power failure. Gogoled it and there were many people with the same problem.

@conradl someones coming to check the pc out at my plae this afternoon (sorry only read ur post now.) Will let u know whats' happening.
The other advice is too technical for me guys. I give up now and will wait to see what the guy snerd referred me to says.

Thanks

Cool man. I know from a few months ago, after loading SP3, my friend said I busted his rig, because of the same error, turned out to be his boot loader skin, lol.

Hope you get is sorted ;)

If you just want to recover documents boot up with a linux live CD. Copy your data and format the drive. Had to do this at work yesterday after the server broke into a million pieces :(

Can I have a piece:D Want to make it into a key chain.

dam ok then. think you will need to format have you got all your things backed up. I just installed windows again without formatting but still have to reload everything but all my documents are backed up at least

ok the tech sorted it out. he said the registry was corrupted and some files couldn't be accessed in system 32 folder.
He booted from his flash in ubuntu and copied some stuff over and it took like 3 houts and it's sorted.
Whew!
