All the bombs (six constructed and one under construction) were destroyed and South Africa acceded to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1991. In 1993 F.W. de Klerk admitted the scope of the country's past nuclear activities to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and gave them access to the country's nuclear sites for verification purposes. On August 19, 1994, after completing its inspection, the IAEA confirmed that one partially-completed and six fully-completed nuclear weapons had been dismantled. As a result, the IAEA was satisfied that South Africa's nuclear program had been converted to peaceful applications.

As far as i know it was a tactical nuclear weapon, to be used on the Cubans.

They also exploded a nuclear device that was launched from a ship in the Indian ocean.

The flash was picked up by a American spy sattelite, that is supposed to identify a nuclear detonation.

The entire thing was clouded in secrecy.

Also the range of the cannon. Official versions made it known that the range was far less than it really was.

That is a bad news cannon.
I heard talk then that the range was in actual fact 120 km,not the 45 km official version.

I actually travelled in the re-supply truck,loaded with 21 or 26 warheads.
That is a huge truck.It takes up one and a half normal car lanes (width)

Who should we really fear? those that might launch a nuke or those that already have dropped two on cities full of innocent people. Personally its bad idea for anyone to have them.

What happened to Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD)?

Some of you people make it out as if the US is a country that is intent on dropping nukes at every opportunity (which if of course untrue - Cold War anyone?). That is BS.

Just wondering: If the US had a just case for war, would you rather them nuke strategic spots and effectively end a potential long-lasting war or have the US government constantly spending billions of US$ (like at the moment in Iraq) against guerrilla warfare in which neither side will be able to claim victory?

I can find nothing about this. There are claims of missile-based delivery systems developed with Israel.

I doubt the 120km range. The longest tested range was 73km according to:

DU - not used in nukes. Extremely hard material.

Used in MBT ammo as well as 30mm cannon ammunition on the A-10 Thunderbolt CAS platform.
