Number portability on its way?

It is uncertain as to how ICASA and Government will ensure that deadlines are met and guidelines are followed, but luckily one party, CellC, will most likely remind the concerned stakeholders about these deadlines.
Simple - fine them each a few million a day until it's ready. Either that or suspend their license until they're ready. Money is an awesome motivator.

That's a very good idea! :D

Most first world countries would impose fines in order that the consumers benefit from legislation like this.

MTN made it clear that the systems to support number portability are complex and that there will be a high cost associated with the implementation of this system. They expect the cost for implementation to be around R 300 million in the first year alone.

Its gone be no use if the cost to the consumer are prohibitive - so hopefully the powers that will be will deal with the issue of cost right from the start

besides those knobs who own the cellular companies should invest something back into the market without passing the cost onto the consumer....

riiiiiight !

Better than fines:

Prohibit the guys who drag their feet to activate any new lines until they toe the line. It could create the situation where only Cell C can accpet new clients :)

I Cell C is keen, they'll make sure MTN/Vodacom can't activate new lines if one of these are keeping the process at ransom.

I'm looking forward to being able to move to the best deal around when my contract is up for renewal. It would be interesting to see the deals to retain current customers.

According to this - http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=2727 - you wont even have to wait for your contract to expire (unless its set to before the implementation anyway).

I agree with Kaspaas.

If CellC has the ability to accept new clients on MNB, see Vodacom and MTN having their MNP service ready within a week. They are purposely delaying this to protect their profits.

the regulations do not set pricing (unfortunately) - MTN did a study on this and pointed out as you do that it would have to be affordable to be realistic...they reckon that anything above 40% of their average revenue per user (ARPU) would be too high

not too sure what that translates into

//i cannot tolerate companies that make billions in profits whining

And it only took them 8 months to complete the tender process... Its a wonder we even have cell phones.
