I think some ladies organised to do their own thing at the time it was happening.

But it doesn't say that. The sign plays with the socially accepted notion of a 'girls night out'. I can't believe that anyone feels genuinely discriminated against by something so trivial and obviously silly.

Who'd have thought it's this difficult for people to recognize discrimination, even when it's aimed against them.

And who would have thought it's difficult to recognize when something isn't genuinely discriminatory. You've come in here making an assertion, everyone disagrees with your assertion, yet to continue to believe that your assertion is correct. As a functioning member of society there's a responsibility on you to discern real issues from nonsense issues. The onus isn't on NuMetro to or any other institution to treat us like children who can't distinguish fact from fiction.

'X-only' events belong in the past, and I really don't care what the X is. Especially when it's for a poorly-conceived marketing attempt at a second-rate cinema.

Er, it's more subtle than that.

It's not discrimination that's bad in itself. Exams discriminate between those who know their work and those who don't. The 100m race exists to discriminate between the fast and the slow. Traffic cops discriminate between those who obey the traffic laws and those who don't. Et cetera.

It is unjust discrimination that is problematic. In other words, it's not a question of discrimination per se but of justice/injustice.

Now justice has two sides to the coin. On the face of it, it is unjust to unequally treat two things identical in the same respect. That is the proverbial double standard.

Oft-neglected is the obverse: it is a breach of justice to treat different things the same. The injustice consists in ignoring material differences and applying the same rule to materially different situations.

One has to ask: What is the res in terms of which the discrimination takes place? This requires some education and insight.

It has escaped the notice of crude modern egalitarians that there are material differences between men and women. They are equally human, and therefore have equal human rights qua their common and identical humanity. But they are not equal in every single respect (we rejoice to note), and therefore it is perfectly licit to recognize and respect those differences. Single-sex schools, for example, do not violate the principle of human equality. Rather, they recognize the reality that males and females develop at different rates (generally), learn in different ways, and that they therefore require different pedagogical styles and approaches. Generally.

One could cite a hundred different applications of the same principles.

People who have a problem with female-only gyms, or men-only sports teams (eg Super 15 rugby), or female-only toilets, or female-only insurance policies, or men-only prison cells, or female-only nights out (as per OP) publicly display their simplistic and narrow egalitarianist view of equality and justice. They are crude Levellers who are ruining the world in their impossible quest to obliterate all differences. Yet it is those very differences that make society possible and life worthwhile.

An exam doesn't discriminate because all students (at least at a superficial level - excluding class issues) have the same access to preparing from the same class material.

What same opportunities do men and women have in enjoying a movie viewing classed as women only?

Where is the pedagogical benefit to this approach, to use your example of schooling?

How are men benefited at all?

Sorry, try your next defense of senseless discrimination in the name of sales.

I'd actually argue that men and women are a lot more alike than narrow-minded marketers in pursuit of neat little market segments would have us believe, but that's a different debate for a different day.

Are you familiar with a slippery slope? If you accept this discrimination because it's for something you don't want, do you only get upset when it bars you from something you DO want?

If it's that, it's hypocrisy. I'm not saying we should all run out and campaign every single social injustice in the world, but when there IS something we can do, it doesn't hurt to do it.

It's the last time I go to a Numetro cinema, not least because of the uncomfortable seats in Canal Walk. If I am ever discriminated against, then I'm never going to support those people ... while I have a choice, I'll exercise it. In this case though, that crude wording has really pissed me off, and if I can take it further I will and have.

Sorry Numetro, but you're going to have to act a little smarter about your marketing decisions.

While you're about it, please also put in a report objecting to single-sex schools, single-sex prison cells, single-sex toilets, single-sex clothing, single-sex sports. They are obviously a far greater attack on "gender equality" than a little playful fun by NuMetro.
 
How do you feel about ladies night at bars and ladies paying lower cover charges at most clubs?
