Numsa warns ANC about e-tolls

Lip service. And what a sad state when unions dictate to their members who they must vote for...

They can't, but their word carries a lot of weight. And they are only suggesting that they NOT vote for the ANC. Not telling them who they MUST vote for.

Reality is that they do tell their members who to vote for and there's a lot of intimidation that goes on too...

That's the hidden side though, good luck proving it.
I know the intimidation goes on, but in this case I think we should support their move.
They are at least opposing the e-tolls and telling the ruling party that they will lose their support.

that's fine by me.

Support them on this, Of course I do.

Yet the ANC will never go back on the e-toll decision and NUMSA will never push their members to vote for another party. It's an idle threat and the ANC know this.

Honestly, money is involved, money the workers would save from corruption. I think the workers decisions would be made up regardless what the head says who they are voting for

It is an idle threat and lacks strategic weight and foresight: NUMSA should simply have said that NUMSA has already decided not to encourage NUMSA members to vote for the cANCer party as a result of going ahead with etrolling.

That way NUMSA could have backtracked on not supporting the cANCer party iff etrolling was actually cancelled.

The majority of South Africa are getting exactly what they voted for: more bribery, more nepotism, more inefficiencies, weaker economy, weaker rand, increased electricity costs, increased transport costs, fewer jobs, and lower effective wages. Every cycle they vote for the weakening and eventual collapse of South Africa.

You are right. This is exactly what happens. This is why government heavily relies on the support of unions. They are in a position to dictate to members whom they should vote for. Union members, especially in election times, are constantly facing intimidation and threats from their own union members.

How do the unions get away with those tactics, why don't the members punish them?

The problem with your assumption is that every one of the workers is going to be impacted by e-tolls, and that they'd comprehend the spin off impacts.

I think it's wrong to be so black and white when hearts are involved; the ANC is again playing the race card; a vote for the opposition is a vote for the return of apartheid (the evil plan of the whitey aligned parties, basically everyone who isn't ANC)

20 years is minor when compared to the clarity of the apartheid history; so although a few extra better educated blacks might shift their vote, the majority won't.

The best we can hope for is for the ANC to lose its absolute majority; the chance of that is far better this round..

Zimbabwe is proof that this probably hasn't run it's full course; i really hope we're some how different, and correct the ship before it's sunk.

There are just too many people in support of the union for a few individuals to attempt to 'punish' anyone. The same goes in times of strikes. If the union decides people should strike, they demand support from all members. Members who do not support them and goes to work runs the risk of being killed or injured.

The same principal applies to elections.

It is too late for South Africa, unfortunately. There is no more time or opportunity to correct the ship.

One can now just sail along and take it from there.
