nVidia GTS250 vs ATI 5770

After reading quite a few reviews, these cards look quite similar (in terms of speed), except that the 5770 supports Dx11.

Do you think the 5770 would be the +-R500 price difference worth, if I could get the GTS250 that alot cheaper?

Thanks!

The GTS250's comparison in ATI is the 5750. The GTS250 is a bit faster, but the 5750 has DX11. If you don't need DX11 then consider the ATI 4850 as it's cheaper than the GTS250 but performs similarly. Or the HD4870.

Otherwise the 5770 is a good card if you want to future proof yourself now for DX11. Performs similarly to the HD4870 with the HD4870 only winning by a few frames at high res. The 5770 is slightly more expensive, hopefully it'll come down in price soon.

Another thing, I'm not such an hardcore gamer (play games occasionally such as WoW, CoD4, Mw2 and considering to buy Battlefield Bad company 2). I mean, I managed with my 8500GT till a few weeks ago when it gave the ghost.

The reason I'm rather looking at the GTS 250 than the 4850, is for the fact that I know nVidia products better (not that I have anything against ATI - My first ever card was ATI and it did me good) but also that I managed to run new games with an old card and was still very playable (played MW2 and Badcompany 2 beta). Dont flame me for this paragraph.

So I mean, having an upgrade from the 8500 to literally any card currently on the market will be a instantly a huge improvement to my system.

i have a xfx gts250 512MB and it is super quick but i'm also running i5-750. I haven't found a game that can't run at 1920x1080 with maxed settings (talking far cry 2 etc) and i can't see why anyone would more fps i.m.o. Cant comment on the ati cards but i was going to get a 4850 if the place had stock...

I really think the 5770 is a much, much better option.

The GTS250 is another of Nvidia's rebranding nonsense, ur essentially buying urself a 8800 ---> 9800 ----> GTS 250. The card is slightly different from an 8800GT, but the performance is pretty much the same.

In my opinion (and experience) a 4850 would perform a lot better than a GTS250. And the 5770 is comparable in performance to the 4870, so I think it's leagues ahead of the GTS250. Not to mention that it has DX11, and new die size means it uses less power and produces less heat than the older generation of cards.

It really will be a much better choice for you, especially since you don't upgrade often, and will definitely be worth the R500 premium.

And no everyone, I'm not an ATI fanboy, I have an Nvidia card. But the fact is right now the ATI stuff is a much more attractive option. For your 500 bucks you're getting brand new technology, a card which most likely won't be obsolete for a few years due to DX11, and much better performance and efficiency over the GTS250.

Bottom line, with the 5770 you're getting technology a few months old, with the GTS250 you're basically getting something 3 years old now.

i recently also asked the same question. i have decided to get a 5770. wondering wat psu to get with it though. . . im thinking 500w

ATI recommends (and these recommendations are usually more than u'd need) a 450W PSU, so 500 will be just fine for you. Just make sure you go for a decent brand so you get enough amps.

But like I was saying, the newer series actually has less power draw so you'll be fine.

If you're on a budget I'd really recommend the Vantec ION2+ series, think they have a 460W and a 520W version. They're very inexpensive and really good quality. Had one running a HD4890 a while ago with no problems whatsoever, and that card draws more power than the 5770. Also comes with the 6-pin connectors you'll need.

Hope that helps.

The 4850 actually looks like a solid card, but the one that that bothers me, is that it only has 512mb ?

Also just had a look on the ATi 5750. The price is about R100 more than the GTS 250.

Any recommendations?

Get this http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?products_id=42728 It's the full 1 gig version. Those very cheap 250's are 512mb cards.

If you wanna save a little money then the 5770 512mb version is kinda cheap. http://nivo.co.za/#buy~club.3d.ati.radeon.hd5770.512mb.graphics.card.cgax.5772i.~p19494

Another thing to factor in is idle power draw:

HD4870 = 90W (by memory, i may be wrong....Did drivers ever fix this?)
HD5770 = 18W
I'm not sure what the 260 draws.

Don't even consider nVidia at the moment.

The awesome combination of DX11, very little heat production, less power consumption makes ATi WAY better..

nVidia is a bunch of BS'ers...
They took their G92 chip and improved/rebranded it about 6/7 times.

8800GT --> 8800GTS (512) --> 9600GT --> 9800GT --> 9800GT+ --> GTS250

I know these cards differ somewhat, but they're all more or less the exact same chip. Pfft nvidia..

I'm getting either a 5770, 5850 or 5870.

Just one thing about these sites, I never know what the warranty is. For me, a warranty is very important.

Then the ATi 5770 it is!
Found that my card, that broke was still under warranty (Apparently Gigabyte offers 3 Year warranties on all their products). Took it to where I purchased it and they sent the card away.

I paid for R900 for the 8500gt back in 2008, so I should be able to get like R900 that off a new card - - Lets just hope they dont replace that card with another 8500... I would be so bleak.

I took the card to where I purchased it 2 years ago and they sent it away.. (no Idea why-- Probably just want to confirm that its faulty)

I payed for that card R900 so, hopefully they can deduct R900 when I purchase the ATi 5770.. I would be so stokked. But, my biggest fear, would be that they give me a new 8500GT.
