Nvidia GTX 460 Power supply question

0o It might bottom out when pushing it. If it doesnt then WOW!

I'm going to upgrade it soon, just for a safety margin, but the PC has been stable for hours of testing and gaming.
 
Look at this spec under power requirement. It asks for a 550W power supply and a 46A 12v plane

So if you SLI this card you will need 92A 12V plane I have personally never seen a power supply that can even get close to that

I can assure you the GTX460 does not need 46A unless its broken. And 92A? Psssh, lots of PSUs have that much available on the 12V rail.

Their spec is likely referring to total system 12V required (CPU, mobo etc) or is a stupid typo since 16A is far more likely

yeah but look at the spec and price of those Power supply my goodness. They cost more than the GFX card

yeah I agree I have a evga one that says 24A for the normal card and 18A for the OC one which also does not make sense but anyway. Lets see if I see smoke when I plug it in :)
 
Those bonkers ratings of 24A on the +12V rails for the GTX 460 is usually for the combination of an i7 CPU + GTX 460 CPU.

Take the TDP values of the graphics card and divide it by 12V to get the minimum required current that you require on the 12V rail.
This implies that the GTX 460 1GB (rated 160W TDP) requires 13.3A.

Just take note that you should always include a safety margin AND if you have a dual rail power supply, that the hard drives and other peripherals (except for CPU) shares the 2nd +12V rail with the GPU.
 
I learnt my lesson with no name power supplies and powerful VGA cards. When I first started out, I had a cheap supposed 500W power supply. I thought this would be enough to power my Geforce 8800GTX, but I learnt that the supply just couldn't supply enough juice on the 12v rail. I ended up buying a Corsair HX620W power supply, and it's been running smoothly ever since. Even with a GTX 480 plugged in, the system keeps running. Moral of the story is to get a decent power supply, and you will be all set. You pay for what you get really.

You get what you pay for, but it's generally a good idea to buy hardware that received good reviews, and to stay away from components that didn't get any reviews unless the brand has a good reputation for that series of components.
It is also important to look at the specifications and minimum requirements before you just jump in and buy something - like another user on myBB recently experienced when his new Socket 775 motherboard didn't support his old Socket 775 Pentium 4 CPU.

The Gigabyte Odin 585W is not bad it will provide more than enough power on the 12V rail I try stay away from no name brands myself.

Also another thing to note the new Nvidia 400 range of GFX cards actually use less power than the old 8800's

My 8800 GTS 320 meg was rated at 250W under load
Nvidia rates the GTX 460 1Gig at a miximum 160W

Its actually funny how things are moving in PC technology its all about makeing more effitient stuff now not just stuff that chews massive amounts of power and gets really hot
 
I really don't know why someone would now go and buy an Odin 585 when you can buy a Corsair CX500 for like R40 more.
The CX500 is better in every aspect: more efficient, has PFC, higher current rating on +12V rail & higher continuous power output.

If money was an issue, I would much rather buy a Corsair CX400, instead of the Gigabyte Odin 585.

I think it would be quite interesting to see how the maximum continuous power output of the CX400 compares with the Odin 585.
 
I think it would be close, 16 and 18 amps vs 33 if i am not mistaken. If anything i see no reason why they would not be on par with each other.

Why would the corsair be better? Purely because of the single rail?

When i bought my 9800gx2 i was told my antec 500w would never work, it ran it plus my q6600 without any problems and my q6600 was overclocked.
 
Single +12V rail design is better without a doubt.

The CX400 is rated 30A on the +12V rail and the CX500 is rated for 34A on the +12V rail, compared to the Odin 585 which is 16A and 18A on the 2 rails.

Both Corsair PSU's have more connectors and they're both more efficient than the Odin 585.
They have pretty much the same protection features.
If you're going to install a big graphics card and many hard drives, then the CX400 would be a MUCH better buy than the Odin 585, since 18A won't cut it.
