Nvidia GTX 460 Power supply question

I have a Gigabyte Odin 585w power supply

I am thinking of getting a Nvidia GTX 460

I am unsure if this power supply can handle the Graphics card. I have been reading about this and even though it only has one 6 pin PCI-E connector I can buy an adapter that will make one of the 4 pin molex connectors into a PCI - e connector

Has anyone got a similar power supply with this GFX card

This power supply is quite new so I don't really want to replace it

The "585watt" is actually a 460watt unit.

It'd probably work though. For how long I don't know.
 
the gtx 460 comes with the molex you need.

The 460 as far as i recall needs a 480w PSU - it tells you on the back of the box (bottom right info panel). You should be fine if you arent running more than 2 HD's , dvd, 2 or so fans..anymore you will probably hear a funny popping sound...then the faint thought that something is burning....
 
I really don't know why people buy such cheap power supplies. There's a reason the 550watt Odin GT is double the price of the Odin "585watt".
 
The normal reference GTX 460 needs a minimum of 450w. If you go for an OC'd GTX 460 I'd say you'd need at least a good 500w PSU.
 
Rather get a Corsair CX500 PSU @ R600. It costs slightly more than the Odin 585, but it is just so much better.
With the CX500 you should be able to run like a Core i7 overclocked to 4.2GHz + GTX 460 1GB OC'd to 900/4400 + have like 4 hard drives installed without running into problems.
I can't say the same for the Odin 585 which is max rated to 585W
 
From what I have read its not the wattage thats the issue its the 12v maximum amps that is the issue. This is why you need two 6 pin connectors.
And to tell you the truch I have looked around not many power supplys can provide more then 35amps on the 12v plane even ones that come out with 2 PCE connectors.

The GFX card uses a maximum of 160w of power my current 8800 GTS uses 167W and goes up to 250W (http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/product-geforce-gtx-460-uk.html) (http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/bfg8800gts/10.html) under Max load so it actually uses more power than the 460 GTX

I am not asking about the wattage I am asking about the 12v Amps. I have read in multiple places that this can either requires a 24amp or 40 amp 12v plane in the power supply.

The 585W has a 34A 12v plane has anyone got this card running on a power supply with a 12v plane than can supply less that 40 amps

Yup sadly not everyone has the money for it, not everyone would understand when a company says a 585w that it cannot infact achieve that. So if anything you should ask yourself why companies lie.

The GFX cards normaly come with the PCI-ex molex adapter. Your PSU would work depending on the mount of HDD's you are using. If you are running 3x HDD's it might be a problem. But If you are running 2 with GTX460 it should be fine.
 
What PSU would you recommend for a 470 with a 965BE, 2hdds and 5 120mm fans?
 
get a Nice corsair/ seasonic 550W or if you dont want to upgrade again go for a 600W
but a good quality 550W is good enough, but I hear (cant remember where) its better not to use a 4 pin molex converter

Actually 585watt is the rated peak output. It can handle that for 1 minute. The Odin GT psus are rated for continuous, not peak output.
 
Guys please read thsi post its not about WATTS the 460GTX uses less thatn my current 8800 GTS

I'm running a 725MHz MSI 460GTX, with AMD 965 BE, 3 x 1Tb Seagate HDD's, 3x 120mm fans, SB X-Fi and DVDRW from a Corsair VX450W. These are incredible PSU's.

Killkom, did you just repost your post?

I am running a GTX 285 with a reasonably priced Raidmax RX-730SS 730W PSU - 24A on each of the 12V connectors (4 Hard Drives & a DVD Writer)
 
I have the exact same PSU and I am running a GTX 460 Full HD on COD Black Ops - No issues.

Thanks Joe thats what I wanted to confirm

Its just scetchy on the requirements of these cards some say 24A on 12V plane and the OC addition of the same card says 18A which is strange then I have another make of card that requires 45A
