Nvidia GTX480 compared to ATI 5870

assuming that the gtx480 is the best card in the nvidia range, then that means the ATI 5970 has no match ad WILL be the best card in the world for a while, or not?

Well we have to wait and see wont we? Once the range is released and sold as stable we can compare reviews and performance. AFAIK the fermi will surpass everything IF Nvidia can solve the power issue!

Which they havent, the GTX480 draws almost as much power as the 5970, IIRC it draws 10W less putting it at 280W. And then even the GTX470 (@ 220W) draws more power than a 5870. Not looking good for nVidia.

Definitely not..

I'm looking at doing the upgrade cycle soon and ATI is clearly the best out their atm, and that doesn't look like it'll change with the Fermi.
 
i think when i have enough money (soon enough) i'm gonna get meself either a 5850 or a 5870, no more nVidia, ATI Radeon FTW!
 
Hmmm, seems like AMD are going to be smiling all the way to the bank! Fermi doesn't seem to be the performer it was meant to be (perhaps Nvidia is losing touch with the fact that they making graphics cards still... and not just gpgpu's ). All AMD have to do is a week or two before Fermi's launch, they drop the prices on everything (by a fair amount), there by stealing customers from Nvidia... that is of course if AMD are making enough profit on each card to do so :p
 
NVIDIA's benchmarking stressed the GTX 480's superior tesselation performance over the HD 5870, but it was level pegging between the two cards during the more conventional moments. It's all well and good being able to handle extreme amounts of tesselation, but it'll only matter to the end user if game designers use it as extensively as this benchmark did.

Don't you love these horribly slanted benchmarks Nvidia seems to be putting out these days? Engadget seem thoroughly underwhelmed by 480's gaming performance.
 
Sometimes profit is not better than market share :D. They have a huge opportunity to take the market in a big way, they would be stupid not to drop prices and put nvidia in a very bad position. They did not do that when they have a better cpu than intel and it cost them.
 
The GTX480 will pwn the 5xxx and 6xxx range, but only if it comes with wood-screws.:D

Well, funny thing is, by the time Fermi comes to hit the market, AMD will have refined the manufacturing process of their cards, and should have driven production costs down. So a nice cut in the price will cause Nvidia a whole lot of sweat. Nvidia seems to be playing a very dangerous game though, considering the market is already quite hostile, and seeing that AMD has become so aggressive, one big f*** up from Nvidia could set them back billions. This is however, assuming that Fermi isn't leaps and bounds ahead of AMD, who knows, maybe Fermi will be able to computer an epic load of crap, thereby making the CPU old news ;)

Possibly. It'll still be a disaster for them because the yield numbers are so low. After a certain point the card can be epic & still fark the company.

lol no. Unless nvidia found a way to get past x86 patents that just not going to happen.
