Nvidia halts chipset dev

Eish... Intel. Just let others make the damn chipsets and you'll get an even larger market share for your CPUs.

Gotta hate companies funded by lawyers.

oi....not a good week for nVidia it seems....

by the time they release their prized GT300 everyone will already be gaming away in HD on the cheaper but powerful 5850/5870 cards

Then again, it is their processor line and this the battle for market share is a big one. Of course, legal costs usually wind up being paid for by margins on product costs in the long run.

On another note, Intel do have a very awesome ICH10R chip when you look at performance figures for things such as RAID, etc., compared to NVidia and others.

What this means is that soon you will only be able to use intel GMA if you decide to go with a nice onboard setup. If you use AMD you will have the choice of using either ATI or nVidia chipset. From an onboard graphics point of view this makes a lot more sense.

You also need to take into account that onboard graphic user are typically on a budget and will want the most bang for their buck and best upgrade path, again you are better off not using intel here.

Guess they are betting a lot on larabee (what a cbeebee name)

On a budget? Tell that to my motherboard with onboard HD3300... I wouldn't say budget. :D

I have onboard 4200 with 4GB of Corsair value RAM. If you compare the platform costs to similar intel platforms it becomes clear that it is what you call budget.

Tomorrow I'll be getting an AthlonII quad core for R1000 - again, a lot of bang for your buck. It is really sad that you will only get intel chipset for intel cpus from now on. Not every competitive or fair - but hey, we know their history.

i wonder if this will makes their prices drop? :D

They do make a good combination though.

Well, let's see where it all goes. I was a big nvidia fan back in their nforce2 era. I doubt they'll just vanish. They should pick up their game and license themselves for x86 and start their own CPU. It'd be nice to have 3 brands to choose from instead of just 2. Competition breeds innovation ... or cheap shortcuts, I don't remember.

As I have explained, their onboard solutions are the worst so HTPC builders and budget builder like me will not even think of intel as an option.

Why did you exclude Via as an x86 maker? They make some pretty impressive low power x86 chips.

Ah, yes, VIA... so can I buy this at the store or do I have an convoluted search ahead of me? My XT is also low power. I was also aiming at regular desktop CPUs, the likes of the phenomII and the core2/i5/i7. So they might be x86 but they're not exactly competing in the same bracket right now. Put them with the atom or the geode or similar, yes... but not higher up where we only have 2 brand offerings.
