I am thinking replacing my Nvidia 8800GTS (Revision 2 aka NV92) in December. I am a bit unclear on what I want to buy... Should I look into cheap SLi setup (e.g 2x 9800gt or 2x 9600gt), a GTX 260/275 or ATi 4870?

Currently the LeadTek 9600gt can be purchased @ R877 while the LeadTek 9800gt @ R1128. the GTX260/275 go for about R2.5k and the 4870 and just under R2k.

Currently my rig rocks out a 40k score in 3Dmark03 and a 14k score in 3Dmark06. Vantage mark gives me a E29k, P8.5k and H5.9k. All scores in default settings offcourse. Perhaps I should wait a bit more?

Any feedback will be appreciated,
Roobir.

so you willing to spend in the R2.5k region? Hmmm, maybe wait a little while for the HD5850 to come into stock... it trounces the GTX260, and it's around the R3k mark now... so come Jan, we looking at around just under R3k :)

Stay with Nvidia;)

Thanks for all the replies so far, its appreciated. I'd also like to add I've never had a multi-gpu setup and im quite keen to try one out. Can you guys tell me anything about running 2x 9600gt or 2x 9800gt or even a crossfire setup please?

Seems like its good timing for grabbing 2x Nvidia @ ~1k each. :)

2x9600gt 1gb scales very impressively...check out tomshardware charts on that story.

What's the rest of your system specs?

Personally I'd go for a 4890

Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 3.15GHz (1.4GHz FSB)
4GB DDR2 Corsair Dominator @ 1.1GHz (5-5-5-15)
Gigabyte P35 DS3R - soon to be replaced for a SLi board if needed
etc.

9600 does not offer anything over a 8800.

Get two HD5970 cards when they become available :D

So you don't have an sli board at the moment.

Get a 5970 as mentioned above or if you can't wait get a 4890/5850
/5870

The PCIE 1.0 slot will bottleneck those cards though

It kicks the GTX 285's ass.

ATi,

Its cheaper than Nvdia,
beats some of Nvidia's expensive cards

ati ftw

Yup.

You could always add the money that was supposed to go to the SLI board for a better single GPU configuration;) ATI> Nvidia at the moment for price/performance.

HAHA! 9600gt in SLI - wow!
why not QUAD-SLI four 8400gs cards!

dude - get a 4870 / 4890 / 5850 - seriously, listen to Zenbaas because he knows what he is talking about.

I've been an NVidia fanboy since day 1. Although my next card is going to be ATi.

RocketBoy bought himself the HD4890 from Prophecy for R1999 (incl. shipping). It's a kick ass card!

I'll prolly only get the 4850 or maaaybe 4870. @ R1200-R1400.

i got the 4890 OC as well. My first ATI. I wont go back.

PS - if you're planning on gaming on linux though i do believe their nvidia support is by far superior so factor that in.

yep, same story with me - been a nvidia fanboi since day two (riva TNT 2 Oeltra) but since I got my ATI I will not go back.

LOL...I'll go to whoever has the best card(price/perf) at a particular time. ATM ATI are way ahead of Nvidia, but it may swing back the other way once again in the future. (Eventually, I doubt fermi will achieve this for Nvidia)
