NVidia vs Radeon

because the op thought nvidia only make & sell the chips, and ati don't (when infact they do the same)

and putting an nvidia card down as a "con" because the OP had a **** card.

Then I stand corrected Keeper I was under the impression that ATI is owned by AMD who produces the Radeon cards thus the same people. As far as putting it down as con, I still do believe it is one as a third party can screw up in how the chipset is used resulting in a Geforce xxx model from Gigabyt being better or worse than a Geforce xxx model from MSI ...etc. Admittedly I did buy an elcheapo when I bought the Geforce 8400GS as it was all I could afford at that stage.

At this stage I am still leaning towards a Nvidia suprise suprise in fact I just got a quote for the "NVIDIA® GeForce 9600GT, 1GB 256Bit GDDR3, PCI-E 2.0, Dual DVI, HDTV, DirectX 10, OpenGL 2.1, SLI Ready"

Keeper if you have any additional information I should take into consideration please post it, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ati is owned by AMD but their chips also get sent to other 3rd party brands, that make the cards themselves. IIRC you do get nVidia 3D cards, so you have everything the wrong way around lol...

anyway,
additional information? - ati offers more bang for your buck.

the 9600GT is going to be another Suxxor card for you, trust me.

The card is pretty good for it's price. And performance wise pretty good. There was a clocked one to almost 900mhz (Core) I read it somewhere.

These cards are pretty good for a sub R 2k card :)

might as well buy a 8800gt then.... you know how old the 88 is?

Would this be a better choice then "GIGABYTE NVIDIA® GeForce 9800GTX, 1GB 256Bit GDDR3, PCI-E 2.0, Dual DVI, HDTV, DirectX 10, OpenGL 2.1, SLI Ready" it another R500 but
if it makes a huge difference then so be it

For the R2000 - R3000 mark, i'd get one of these:
HD 4850 1G GDDR3 PCI-E DUAL DVI-I / TVO LITE R 1,993 incl.
HD 4870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E DVI-I / TVO Toxic (Sapphire) R 2,734 incl.
HD 4870 2G Vapor X- Cool GDDR5 PCI-E DUAL - Sapphire R 3,190 incl.

I thought only ATI's Linux drivers were k@k? Are their Windows drivers also bad?

Seriously, just get what Keeper said. It is the best you can get for that amount and they are CURRENT gen cards.

I am not planning on going cheap again that's for sure. So which cards should I be looking at ?
I have +- R1800 available to spend.

Guys guys guys

He said he only has about R 1800 lets say R 2000. Give him a card in that range with decent specs ;)

Ah sorry pitbull didn't see that post - so i guess it would be either the 4850 @ R1993, or one of these:

Geforce 9800GT 650Mhz 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI - Sparkle R 1,651 incl.
Geforce 9800GTX+ 765Mhz 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI XT Edition - Sparkle R 2,337 incl.

I've always been a Nvidia fan but after looking at GPU's for my soon to be purchased high end system I've gotta say Radeon takes the cake. A lot Better performance per buck.

I was going to get the 9800GTX+, its a good card thats got lots of good reviews. Granted it is a older card - but still worth a look at. The new range from Nvidia GT/S are going to be out of your price range.

what greed? the man is simply looking for a good gfx card, i'm sure he has learned his lesson with the 8400.

STINGY+GREED =EPIC FAIL

Geforce 9800GT 650Mhz 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI - Sparkle I guess
R 1,651 incl vat.
A useful tip. Always google "9800gt sparkle problem" or whatever to check if that brand for that specific card has any known problems, for instance when the 8800gt just came out xfx had send out a bad bunch which is considered to be a "good" brand.

Anyways it won't dissapoint.

Firstly thanks for all the replies and advice. It would seem the best coarse of action right now would be to save up some cash and buy a decent card in R3000+ price range.
