I am looking at buying a new GPU and I not sure witch to go for, I currently own a Gigabyte Geforce 8400 GS which has given me so much crap that I considering going for a Radeon. So here is my pro and cons for each, if my information is wrong please feel free to correct me.

Radeon
Pro: They actually produce display cards, They seem to be leading the race
cons: Drivers are a bit sucky from what I hear.

Nvidia
Pro: Decent drivers, Seems to be the popular choice
Cons: They produce chip sets and third parties build the cards, My current Geforce 8400GS from Gigabyte sucks infact it is incapable of playing wow for more than 10min.(This might have nothing to do with nvidia but hence my comments they don't make there own cards)

Thanks in advance

It doesn't matter which brand you go for, as long as you don't get the cheapest, lowest end card you can buy again.

Your problem is not not brand, but model.

seeing as you like your cards cheap, i'd suggest going for ati.

....and so it begins!

I have a XFX GeForce 7800 GTX... never ever ever gave me problems in windows or Linux... it just works amazingly.

But, bang for buck... go for Ati. They're cheap and does the job.

I am not planning on going cheap again that's for sure. So which cards should I be looking at ?
I have +- R1800 available to spend.

Bought myself a 9800GT MSI card on Friday. Works like magic on GTA4, Far cry 2, Hawx and a few other games I have tested during the weekend. Full settings on Crysis Warhead - runs smooth on my quad core. I paid just less than R1500 for the card so I am very impressed.

Lol.

ATI drivers aren't all that bad - I found running crysis warhead was a lot prettier with a 4850 than an 8800 - and I know you'll say it's because the 4850 is a more powerful card but I think there is more.... Anti aliasing was better, water was sharper, textures had a kind of shimmer. It isn't all about fps. TBH I never had a problem with the ati drivers except for one app I use quite often - Dolphin emu - which ran a bit slower with ATI. Apart from that it was a great card and super value for money.

But it's not an X vs Y thing. The gts250 is also good value for money and low power consumption. It really comes down to your budget.

LOL, that's one hell of a 9800gt!!! :p

Um, maybe wait for the AMD/ATI HD4750/HD4770 as those are looking to be some real little champs. it owns (and from reviews, it's quite clear) the 9800gt, hd4830(with I think it's replacing) and sits behind the hd4850. In fact, if you look here it beats the HD4850 at you more lower resolutions! so i think it's quite a little trouper :p

It looks as though it's gonna be a May release, so perhaps you should wait a tiny bit, and with the R/$ exchange rate looking good. so you might have to spend about R1500-R1800 for it :)

After looking at things again perhaps it time for full upgrade
My little pentium D and 2gig ram might also be a problem.

So I am open to suggestions, I don't need keyboards and mice
got myself a nice screen a week ago Samsung T240 which is
great so what could I get for 7k new case and psu will also be
needed.

P.s. I not into the pimp my case stuff so no lights and see through
stuff.

I was in a toss up between the 9600GT and the HD4770.

I went with the 9600GT because of the availability, couldn't find an HD4770 or something (might even be some other 47 series) anywhere.
I must also add that it's a Gainward make and I'm very happy with it. No problems and it's a very very good budget card :)

What a hideously misinformed and illogical post. The car crash analogy works well here..

Biggest difference I think between the 2 makes are the fact that Nvidia had to be supplied with seperate power from the PSU to give it full potential as to where Radeon doesn't.

I'm no Geek so pls don't quote me on this :p

because the op thought nvidia only make & sell the chips, and ati don't (when infact they do the same)

and putting an nvidia card down as a "con" because the OP had a **** card.
