So you can have R10 000 OOB chargers and you must pay for it even if you have a R200 credit limit?

You referring to the call limit not credit limit. The call limit was in place before data was introduced and was designed for phone calls. The reason why Vodacom cannot lock you at the limit amount is due to the amount of data used in the internet session. If the call limit was set for R200 and your session was for R400 , then after you logged off and the billing system updates Vodacom then sees that you call limit of R200 has been reached and then locks you. If it was possible to lock you on a internet session then it would be perfect.

VD, the end result is still a possibility for a big OOB bill, that is why everybody is suggesting that VC do this promotion on a top-up contract with a hard cap.

Maybe vodacom should ask cell c how they stop their data bundles mid session. I have several cell c prepaid datasims. They just stop when the data runs out.
Also vodacom could also ask their prepaid data technicians how they do it as they also stop. So I do not believe it is not possible to lock one during an internet session. Someone with some legal background should possibly take this issue to the consumer protection guys as I find it unacceptable that one cannot control ones spend. ie I only want to pay R149.00 per month and no more.

This has been covered numerous times in different threads. The problem is not with prepaid. Vodacom will also stop your session if you run out of data or airtime. The problem is with the contract option. Contracts run on a different billing engine that at the moment can not do real time billing for data. It is a bit delayed. It is the same with Cell C and MTN with their contract options.

As they say...compare apples with apples. You cant compare Vodacom's contract 2Gig option wiht Cell C 2Gig prepaid option.

I am aware this has been covered numerous times. I just find it difficult to accept that someone from vodacom can say it is not possible when it must be possible to hard cap an account.
I know there are numerous people out there asking for a hard capped or prepaid deal similar to cell c. (just look at the poll graph at the top) Unless vodacom offers this i think their future in mobile data is limited/doomed.
Cell C just needs to get wider coverage then vodacom mobile data is definitely doomed.

Not going to happen.

Not going to happen.
I get the feeling cell c is rolling out in many areas and switching on more sites although their map does not reflect this.
Had no cell c signal in one area in Jeffreys bay until last weekend now a 3g signal at 38% and has been running this whole week. Map shows no 3g at all.
Just wish cell c will tell us where they are rolling out so we can market to people in those areas.

Cell C will not overtake either Vodacom or MTN in SA in terms of subscribers, on either voice or data.

I think that may be but may also be irrelevant once cell c has good coverage.
It then makes it far easier for me to recommend cell c for internet access for first time users and in particular those who are considering adsl 384 or 1mb.

Yada,Yada, Yada...............Yada!
1) Every customer knows precisly what size his/her data bundle is.
2) Vodacom offers various data use monitoring systems;
(a) The website www.vodacom.co.za
(b) The USSD codes *111# commands
(c) The Self help platform "Short Codes" 31050 SMS

All that remains to stop the "Bleating" and apply common sense by proper monitoring of your data by useing the given monitoring tools on a daily bases and you will never be a victim of the "OOB Shark".

I agree that you and i and all those on mybroadband are in a position to monitor their bandwidth usage. I do this for at least 10 friends as well to let them know how they are going.
However for every one of us there are i am sure at least 100 others that are not able to do this and do not realise what and when data is being use and how to switch off win7 autoupdate etc.
it is for these users that vodacom should offer a capped option.

Why on earth must the customers jump through hoops just because Vodacom can not (will not) provide a hard cap?

Much better to use a provider who can provide a hard cap!

There's just too much of a financial risk. Would you bet your car on those monitoring tools, especially considering that the data you see can be several hours behind?

Even though it has been covered there has never been a technical explanation why it's not possible for real-time billing and hard-capping. On every computer system I have ever seen it is possible and not too complicated to do, at least for an experienced programmer.
You have no clue what you are talking about.

Do you have any idea of the scale of Vodacom's billing system? How many million customers they have?

This would be possible IF vodacom updated these stats real time, but as it takes up to 24 hours for this to happen, trying 111 etc really can at best be a guideline.

Vodacom wants people to go in OOB so they can rip us of even more

Yes i agree. Vodacom must have more prepaid customers than post paid and yet amazingly they are able to hard cap their prepaid customers with ease as their profits will be severely affected if any one of these prepaid customers use more than the amount they have paid up front. (sorry they will now allow you to go a massive R10 !!! over your prepaid airtime if you have been a valuable customer for a year. !!!)
However they struggle severely to hard cap their post paid customers. I can only presume they want all post paid customers to go out of bundle and amazingly the least they will even attempt to cap these dedicated customers is R50 and hopefully for vodacom much much more !!!!
Any one with some legal background ? is this worth taking to the consumer protection guys ?

Agreed - surely the CPA gives some protection?

Do we sign an "unlimited credit" agreement with Vodacom/MTN/etc? My guess is no. Which will make a 60k bill illegal (even 10k).
