Obama Emergency Powers

Should Obama Control the Internet?

Senator Democrats are attempting to pass legislation which will give President Obama the authority to shut down the Internet and seize private networks.

On CNET News, Lee Tien, a senior staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), stated
“As soon as you’re saying that the federal government is going to be exercising this kind of power over private networks, it’s going to be a really big issue.”

The bill, misleadingly titled “The Cybersecurity Act of 2009″ , allows Obama to declare an emergency based upon no hard criteria.
Once he declares this emergency, he can effectively shut down free speech on the Internet.

Jay Rockefeller, the bill’s sponsor, said
“I know the threats we face. Our enemies are real. They are sophisticated, they are determined and they will not rest.”
Unfortunately, it looks like the threat which Jay is most worried about is free speech from Americans who do not approve of Obama’s plans to impose national socialism upon the citizens of the United States.

In addition, the bill will require government licenses of any individual who seeks employment as a “cybersecurity professional”, effectively giving the Democratic party authority to prevent their political opponents from being involved in protecting either government or private networks from attack.

FICA -- RICA ............

Seems it is not just the USA that is being "Socialised"

[ Just knew that there had to be a "Rockefeller" in there somewhere ]

Sad day for the USA -- LOT of Americans VERY unhappy with the imposter that tricked them all

They are going to be even more upset after IRAN

( WHY have all these "emergency" laws if you are not going to use them  )

Afaik this was planned during the bush years. The Internet is waking people up and showing them what the MSM does not want to show, this is inevitable.

Just look at the brutal g20 videos leaking onto the net, the MSM would not dare show it...

Correction......

Not all. Far from it.

Sufferwell typically blames bush lol :D

Anyway this is tinfoil hat stuff. He won't shut down the internet ffs:rolleyes:. This is just a proposed bill. If it goes through then you can start to worry

Imho the forces that be are now desperately scrambling to hold on to their power with obviously hostile and unwarranted measures.

With the fiscal year ending next week, and the looming fall of the dollar, they have a lot to lose.

They must fail, we will not allow the few to corrupt this world anymore.

Just look at the times wikileaks got shut or Pirate bay raided, there is a motivation to clampdown but the Internet is too complicated for those who want it shut.

They have been talking about it for years, because they know the massive threat the internet is to their grip on power.

It is really funny how they "prepare" the population for these measures.
If you watched the past series of 24 it was all about cyber terrorism etc. A month or 2 later Senator Rockefeller brought the bill to the house.

Quite a good social programming strategy. And the bill gets pushed with all sorts of threats from the MSM about cyber security and Chinese/Russian Hackers.

Really, It's quite pathetic.

For example the "patriot act" is meant to protect Americans from terrorist plots, yet that's not what's it's being used for...
Only three of the 763 "sneak-and-peek" requests in fiscal year 2008 involved terrorism cases, according to a July 2009 report from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. Sixty-five percent were drug cases.

Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) quizzed Assistant Attorney General David Kris about the discrepancy at a hearing on the PATRIOT Act Wednesday. One might expect Kris to argue that there is a connection between drug trafficking and terrorism or that the administration is otherwise justified to use the authority by virtue of some other connection to terrorism.

He didn't even try. "This authority here on the sneak-and-peek side, on the criminal side, is not meant for intelligence. It's for criminal cases. So I guess it's not surprising to me that it applies in drug cases," Kris said.

The European BMD shield was also planned in the "Bush Era" yet it took Obama 5 seconds to scrap it. If Obama was as liberal as he pretends to be and his supporters thought he is, he'd scrap this.

In general Republicans are more for Constitutional Ideals such as Free Speech than the socialists in the Democratic Party. Note also how Obama did not rescind any of Bush' Patriot policies.

Obama is about the talk but not the walk. Ugh.... another 3 years only before the Republicans return. Can't wait.

I don’t know any details about this, but all you have posted is spin, assumptions and Rep. wishful thinking.

Senator Democrats are attempting to pass legislation which will give President Obama the authority to shut down the Internet and seize private networks.

I take it that Senator = Senior. What is this? I can say Senior Republicans are mutating into vampire bats. Doesn’t make it true. This is just a thumbsuck.

On CNET News, Lee Tien, a senior staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), stated “As soon as you’re saying that the federal government is going to be exercising this kind of power over private networks, it’s going to be a really big issue.”

Any scaremongering depends on quoting out of context. It’s important to know context (what came before and after an inflammatory quote).

The bill, misleadingly titled “The Cybersecurity Act of 2009″ , allows Obama to declare an emergency based upon no hard criteria. Once he declares this emergency, he can effectively shut down free speech on the Internet.

Under a state of emergency, many freedoms are curtailed. All over the world. That’s the general idea. What’s ‘hard criteria’?

Unfortunately, it looks like the threat which Jay is most worried about is free speech from Americans who do not approve of Obama’s plans to impose national socialism upon the citizens of the United States.

Now we are getting to the crux. So basically, this is a Republican whine about socialism.

In addition, the bill will require government licenses of any individual who seeks employment as a “cybersecurity professional”, effectively giving the Democratic party authority to prevent their political opponents from being involved in protecting either government or private networks from attack.

Well duh! All “cybersecurity professionals” should be licensed Otherwise any criminal geek can set himself up as a “cybersecurity professional”. Besides, allegiance to a political party is secret under a democracy.

Why does this thread not post replied until censored? Other threads post immediately. I have tried to post 4 times now and nothing. Stop the censorship.

If that does happen the world will be in a upraw.

Uproar.
And I doubt he will ever do it. It's a bill, not an enforced law with Obama closing down the internet once its in effect.
So basically with the bill, his got the power to, but now logically speaking, why would he

Well it's unconstitutional unless it's genuinely in the interests of national security. If not, he should be impeached if he tries this.

If Obama messes with the internet, i'll be the first to say "f### you Obama!!!" I don't care who you are, leave the internet alone.......!!!!!!!!

You kidding? I bet he could very well do it

No, he couldn’t. Even internally [within America]. China is a far more repressive and controlling society than America and they can’t. America is far less strictured than China. The Internet was developed during the Cold War as a massively decentralised system immune to nuclear attack. In the event of attack, there was no single site where the computers could be knocked-out. It would always continue to work but with reduced efficiency. The Internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. It cannot be shut-down by a single country. If Obama thinks he can, he is dreaming. If opponents are trying to demonise him with these scare tactics, they are also dreaming. It can’t be done.
