OBAMA Bill to close down Internet

No, he couldn’t. Even internally [within America]. China is a far more repressive and controlling society than America and they can’t.

Because China does not have control of the internet. CHina can filter traffic which flows across its borders but can't shut down sites overseas and change DNS entries. America on the other hand CAN do this. ICANN is controlled by the US - it's a US agency. Also most traffic gets relayed via the US - at least between the most popular sites and the world - most of which are hosted in the US, heck even 2ch (the largest forum in the world) is hosted in the US.

Secondly which companies provide search engine services to the world?
Google, Yahoo, MSN (and a few other US companies). US Govt could shut them down or force them to shut down their operations or filter their results.

The US can effectively kill the internet - oh sure you'll still be able to log in to Telkom.co.za but forget about Google, Yahoo, Microsoft.com, apple.com or any of 1000,000's of sites out there.

It can’t be done.

Yes it can, and yes you'd still be able to access some sites but not the ones you access most of the time right now.

I don't think Obama would do it and if he did it the US senate would impeach him but he's the one creating these draconian laws. Bush was much better.

because of what happened in america with the world trade centres the patriot act was brought into being, amongst other acts, so all that has to happen is that someone shuts down corporate america or anything related to the internet and the running of america and this bill will quickly get passed.

Bush at least took the fight to the terrorists. I support that.

I support Bush for numerous reasons - I wasn't so keen on Iraq but every US president would have done that. Obama would have also done that.

Bush is good. So is the ex president.

No don't blame this on Bush. Patriot Act was passed as a way to curtail SAUDI funds to Al Quada. As another positive consequence this fight against financial money flows to terrorist groups allowed for the end of the terrorism in Northern Ireland. With the Patriot Act came some stupid things - such as this whole security theater screening thing in US airports and more power to the FBI to tap phones and such but Obama could have fixed these issues if he wanted. He scrapped the BMD shield in Europe which was agreed upon by Bush already - it's very easy to reverse former president's policies.

The Internet has made many US millionaires and makes billions, that's the only thing preventing the the US government from interfereing. It's a major cash cow.

Yes they can actually ;) They can stop it from coming into their country

No, they couldn’t. Trying to block all entry points would be like trying to block a sieve. Think of the practical difficulties. America is not China. There is a big base of technically sophisticated users (far more [and more talented] than the American government can field and far bigger than China). There are a myriad of sources of technical hardware. Any government efforts will simply be short-circuited. Not to mention that it would be an extremely unpopular move and the political kiss-of-death for Obama.

No-one has control of the Internet. Some Americans might think they do. I am avoiding addressing the technical aspects – because I am not technically secure and because it will only have limited reading appeal. Consider the pragmatic aspects:

The ICANN institution may control aspects by virtue of America’s superior ‘clout’ but it would be very short-sighted of America to assume that there weren’t non-American ‘shadow’ agencies dying to step into any breech. Or that America holds a monopoly on technical talent.

The companies you mention will register elsewhere [other countries] because they would see their market position eroded by these policies. A move like that is just plain dumb, not patriotic or anything.

What about the ‘land of the brave and the home of the free’? There are huge segments of the American public who are not too charmed with government interference. This would erode America’s self-image. There are pockets of survivalist types who would take direct and violent action. There is the, much larger, Republican faction who would pounce gleefully on a Democratic faux paux (it’s un-American!). It would be political death for Obama (with some justification). If America pulled-out of the Internet, it would be a major blow to Internet effectiveness, but the Internet wouldn’t die.

There is not even the remotest chance of this happening. Republican scare tactics.

BACKBONE

No-one has control of the Internet.
Some Americans might think they do.
I am avoiding addressing the technical aspects – because I am not technically secure and because it will only have limited reading appeal. Consider the pragmatic aspects:

WHO controls the "backbone"

WHO controls "inter-oceanic cables"

I think that if you scratch carefully you will find that the main backbone is controlled by a few companies.

I think that if you scratch carefully you will find that the inter-oceanic cables are controlled by a few companies.

--> eg. "TATA"

So I for one certainly think that the "Internet" could be severly constrained.

There is not even the remotest chance of this happening. Republican scare tactics.

I know that it is old history -- but I suggest you read up about the "MORRIS WORM"

As for "scare-tactics" I would be scared -- VERY scared :erm:

IF things got bad enough for Obama to do this , he would be a "dead-duck" anyway.

WHAT did the American "security" do with Japanese-American CITIZENS during the WWII ??????

BIG hypocrites full of BS

I am amazed that people still think that America is governed by the president........

This is the genius of western government. When things get bad, blame it one dude. Vote him out of office, then everyone feels like they changed the world and all is good.

Exactly, it's the money that does the talking, the Government is just a show that companies and rich elites put on for the people.

Internet will be safe while Internet millionaires and companies like Google have a say, Corporate internet will be the end of the free internet age and it's slowly happening.

Google is not to be trusted but for now they do look out for the current age.
