WASHINGTON — The president's new science adviser said Wednesday that global warming is so dire, the Obama administration is discussing radical technologies to cool Earth's air.

John Holdren told The Associated Press in his first interview since being confirmed last month that the idea of geoengineering the climate is being discussed.

One such extreme option includes shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun's rays. Holdren said such an experimental measure would only be used as a last resort.

"It's got to be looked at," he said. "We don't have the luxury of taking any approach off the table."

Holdren outlined several "tipping points" involving global warming that could be fast approaching.

Once such milestones are reached, such as complete loss of summer sea ice in the Arctic, it increases chances of "really intolerable consequences," he said.

Twice in a half-hour interview, Holdren compared global warming to being "in a car with bad brakes driving toward a cliff in the fog."

Well at least someones trying to do something about it.

Yeah, but I think the key here should be to change our energy usage habits and efficiency rather than try and geo-engineer a solution. We've already seen one geo-engineering FAIL with the whole dumping of iron into the ocean thing.

Yes getting 6.3 billion people to do that is easy. Why don't we just send an email and I am sure they will all respond favourably.

Like they said, "only as a last resort".

Also you can not rely on even 30% of the worlds population to do the right thing.

6.3 billion people in this world. 6.2 billion of them are ****s.

These people are treating the symptom instead of the underlying problem, definitely not smart.

Can you treat the underlying problem when the host is dead?
We need something to stop the warming now, not when weve fixed all the issues.
Whats good about this is they are looking at options to lower the temp now. And right now getting all countries to cut their emissions immediately is almost impossible.

Why even look at this as a problem or something stupid? Its bloody important, and we need to address the issue... waiting for the **** to hit the fan to apply a fix is just not going to work.

Dont ridicule them, at least its being discussed..

Dunno man, I'd have thought we'd learn by now that messing with nature on such a large scale is not a Good Thing.

As if the myriads of literature on MEGASHIELDS isn't enough to put people off. We got into this situation by abusing nature - messing around even more will hurt us no end.

I think they misunderstood him when he said he wanted "a black out in space".

Pretty soon we are going to need sections of cities closed off in giant spheres :p all self sustaining and what not. Quite sci-tech stuff that :)

hold on, shooting particles into the air will reflect more sunlight meaning we got even colder winters? so much for turning global warming into a ice age?

Exactly. And if you're going to, make sure it's something you can reverse in case it doesn't work out the way you think it will. A big umbrella that you can take down again is more reasonable than spreading particles that you can't just hoover up.

Remember, in the 70s they thought we were heading into an ice age. We're not always right about where things are heading.

That world cost votes and votes > the planet :o

Off course there is the added bonus of making some people lots of moola off hair brained schemes

So what do you suggest be done. I'm still waiting for a practical plan that would prevent MMGW

The plan's damned simple and very easy to achieve (except for the small obstacle of pure human selfishness) - have ONE child only, or preferably none at all.
