I think that the Muslims should respect the wishes of the victim's families. Just because they can do it legally doesn't mean they should. It is incredibly insensitive.

I think they have an ulterior motive. Islamists love looking like victims and martyrs in order to gain global sympathy. They are intentionally antagonising people here so that when the inevitable backlash comes they can whine about being victims of Islamophobia and stir up more militant Islamic terrorists.

If they really wanted to generate understanding, peace and goodwill they would stop this immediately.
 
Lol, the naivety of some people on this forum astounds me.

I'm for the mosque, it shows that the American people ARE in fact more tolerant and level headed than the small percentage of 'Islam followers' in the ME. Sadly it will probably be burnt/blown up shortly after being finished.

As to the "up to something":

The one who proposed the mosque, and claims that he want's to 'bring together communities', doesn't even support a church to be built in a muslim nation either, in fact he says that he want's "only Muslim law", here's the excerpt;

But why the need for whoever is building it to place it very close to the place where thousands died?

They could probably place it anywhere else in NY... it's almost like they doing it for a publicity stunt!

I think nobody else has a say for or against except those living in new york, I was following these discussions on reddit and most NY'kers seem to support it, I was having a laugh at how they portray people who don't live in NY as being out raged.. "But my TV it burned!" lol

What legal justification is there for refusing a mosque on the site ?

Sure it's going to offend many people but so would an abortion clinic, a massage parlour, or a betting joint.

It's not illegal to be a muslim in America is it ?

Everyone seems to be behaving as though it was going to be the Head Office of the KKK or the Bin Laden Fan Club.

For the rest, I think that your views are relavent, but then:
Why would we not allow a Nazi monument to be built there?
Why is it that the designers of the new Center have been busy for almost a decade now working on reverence for a new design, and here, just across the street a the most inappropriate thing imaginable is going to get built? What is the point of all the reverence then?
What about a giant dildo, why not build that there too? would people have a reason to complain?
No it is not illegal to be muslim in America and no body has said that it was so. Just that Muslims should not build over others rights or take the rights from others, and in this case it is a huge and complicated situation of reverence.
Why should we allow a movement that doesn't respect the rights of others to build directly in the heart of those who they don't allow? The guy who proposed the mosque even himself would not allow a church to be built even in his nation, not even to mention a small remote town, let alone such as in this occasion.

It's mostly a matter of rights and a matter of reverence, and yes reverence IS relative and just. a bit liike your next door neighbor selling liqueur from his house 24 hours, should you just shut up?
