OCD and anxiety related problems

My last Global Assessment of Functioning rating was 41-50, so I no longer work.

I don't respond well to unplanned social interaction - everything from shopping trips to visits from friends must be arranged at least 2-3 days in advance, and even then can still be cancelled on the day if I suddenly don't feel like it. I am completely home bound, leaving the house, at most, once a week - and even then it's only to the local supermarket at 10am, and not a large shopping centre or mall (which I tackle once a month, if I really have to).

I don't answer the telephone (or cellphone) unless it's my husband or my mother, all other communication is electronic.

While I've had BMD all my adult life, the anxiety and social phobia started 4 years ago. Things are slowly starting to improve, but I'm not sure if I'll ever get back to where I was pre-2008 (in terms of the anxiety and social phobia), and at least I'm ensuring that my Psychiatrist and Psychologist can continue to live very comfortable lives.

Sorry to hear :( Living with an anxiety is not nice. For me, going to work each day is such a mission, I love my job so much, but whilst driving to work I have to mentally prepare myself for the day ahead. As soon as I walk into the door at the office, and I hear the typing I want to turn around and run away, and I have to force myself to walk in lol!

I'm totally wacked. Most, if not all of the above, and most likely most of what follows.

The heading of this thread should've been "CDO and anxiety related problems"

CDO is like OCD, except the letters are in alphabetical order, the way they SHOULD BE!

I suffered from very severe panic attacks due to PTSS, have not had one in a while but carry Beta-blockers with me in case.
I also have bad anxiety....oh well what can you do??

Was it something that happened in your life to trigger it?

Slowly expose yourself to the triggers until you become accustomed to them.

It's what I've been doing for the last two years.

Used to be that I would start panicking in open spaces and near heights. This first manifested itself at Cape Point when I could no longer swallow (fear/anxiety worked up to the point where I felt I was going to choke and "forgot" how to swallow). Now I sit on a cliff overlooking the ocean and have lunch every couple of days :)

I refuse to allow my fears to control me or negatively impact my life.

There are still things I have difficulty with, but I'm getting there.

I nearly caused an accident due to a phobia I developed for the amber traffic light after receiving 3 fines in a couple of months for going through it as it turned red... my warning is to everyone get help and learn to manage them it can become dangerous if you don't...

Veteran Panic and Anxiety disorder sufferer here. Started suddenly one day in Std 8 although in retrospect there were warnings like full on insomnia for 6 months.

Severe and frequent panic attacks with elevated anxiety in between. This caused social and confidence issues and all kinds of knock on effects. Took about 10 years before I was able to control things and lead a normal life.

People, I can barely stand being with people. It is very tiring to be an empath, being highly empathic is not a blessing at all, it is a big darn curse.

My phone is permanently on silence, nothing disturbs me more than someone calling me or arriving at my door, I am instantly in a bad mood.

Everything I do is related to emotions, the route I choose to drive, what I eat, what I wear, what I do. My sentences start with " I feel.."

Cannot function with dirty hands, frequent hand washing - but not over the top, and no hand creams, hands must breath, and never be sticky.

Unable to fully accept the common reality. Struggle when in public, do not make eye contact, become short tempered, get lost in shops, forget what to get, disorientated, constant background feeling of danger/crime/men.

I have a favourite coffee cup, I get irritated if someone else uses it.
Nobody touches my pc, laptop, kindle, ipod, camera, cell, I know how to use my devices, so keep your dirty fingers off my stuff lol

I've always had memory problems, if I don't see my stuff, I forget I have them. Don't move my stuff.

I do things in batches, I will watch movies/series for several days in a row, day and night, then I might read for 17 weeks non stop, then game for three months, then garden like a maniac.

When I have 'contact' with people, I am left with an emotional residue (empathic hangover) for weeks after, it can consume me, the only solution is to be reclusive.

Yoh. It looks like everyone on myBB has some kind of condition (sickness?). Typical of a forumite.
I need to do some investigation to see if I have any condition.

Bloody hell. I thought I was reading about me there.....

Fortunately all character quirks and flaws now have mental health classifications ..so dig and you're sure to come up with one or more.

Lovely thread and im glad this one has been brought to light.

I too suffer from severe anxiety, so bad i mistook it for bipolar after terrible reoccurring depression(unipolar).

It turned out to be Pure-O(OCD without the rituals, its most disturbing form all of which originates from terrible anxiety),and this was the cause every time, but as a reaction too severe stressors occurring in my life.

The only way to fight this devil is too face your fears(when you are ready or strong enough), and become an expert on such matters and i have found the best people i have ever encountered on the net after many days of research.

None of these guys have doctorates but are very good teachers as they have suffered from the full spectrum of OCD, easily upstaging the very psychiatristS/psychologists who diagnose but don't experience OCD.

Who better to learn from then those who have faced and conquered it?

Derek Soto and Robert Lindsay(not the actor.)

If you check out Derek's blog and website you will gain insight on the various forms of OCD.

Its a course he expects you too pay for, but he sends you a free email on OCD with an occasional free video that really explains and helps the sufferer.

Sorry to rant, but i have such empathy for those who suffer from OCD or any mental disorder, because if you haven't experienced it, you could never truly appreciate the depths of the personal hell it could take you too.

I know it sounds a little out there, but i have decided to make it my personal life mission to fully overcome OCD and too start getting paid for all the research by studying this terrible affliction down to the very neurons that OCD plays havok with and eventually help others.

Its such a common mental disorder and its so unspecialized, especially in SA.

OCD occurs in almost all mental disorders concurrently yet is merely a subset to more serious ones.(They reckon)

Never make light of this condition by laughing and teasing as i have when i discovered my uncle suffers from the ritualistic form of OCD.

It took it grip onto me with pure O and its a daily personal battle that drains the battery of a persons soul.

Anxiety sucks, its like Goku from dragonball Z in its Saiyan form.
In super Saiyan form Goku becomes blond and OCD and its levels of hell gains its spectrum.

Karma's a bi***.

I have been diagnosed with social phobia, anxiety attacks and depression. I'm also very much a recluse and don't go out unless I have to (mostly work... can't remember last time I went to a mall of my own volition!). I have the exact same issue as wrathex with phones... don't like being called on any phone or calling people, much prefer email or text-based communication. Also have OCD (haven't been diagnosed specifically but have all the symptoms) and thanks to my eczema, a bit of self-harming. Need to take anti-anxiety meds to sleep.

As for panic attacks, I've learned to shrug them off. As soon as I start feeling like I can't breathe, getting heart palpitations etc., I just concentrate on something else (anything except the physical sensations) and in about half a minute I'm fine again. I refuse to let a stupid chemical imbalance ruin my entire day!
