Odd-Looking Scuba Mask Turns You Into a Fish

I just had a funny thought. Imagine this thing could process 192 litres of water per minute... it'd rip your face off with the water pressure.

At least you wouldn't need your fins... you could use it like an underwater jet:D

Surely the lungs need to be expanded in order for gaseous exchange with blood to take place. Which is how we evolved to breathe on the surface with an 80% filler. If we only took requisite volume oxygen, wouldn't CO2 buildup and O2 supply become an issue due to lung underinflation?

Does oxygen requirement also not increase rapidly the deeper you go? How much less effective would this become at depth? Would the pressure at depth perhaps also have an effect on the energy required to extract gas from liquid?

Dafaq? In through your nose?

I breathe in through my mouth because that's where the reg is, and out through my nose and mouth together to keep the mask equalized.

Sorry my bad wrong way round.

Point was it's quite a technical thing and not just plain breathing in and out.

Do it wrong and you are in trouble.

Yes, I am a teacher and a pretty damn useless one according to you for not knowing about physics.

You are the same as my doctor (maxillo-facial surgeon) (who I am with for my sleep apnea). We are planning to do some some major surgical restructuring of my upper and lower jaw to fix my problem.

But the other day when he explained the planned procedure I asked him about the effect on my lower jaw nerve channels and he made the following statement:

----"I can see you are not a biology teacher otherwise you would have known along which lines the lower jaw nerve channel ran."

.... I'm not a biology teacher and he knew that before.

Do you dive?

Not really.

Went through the training and with a mixture or allergies and just not feeling comfortable with the breathing under water thing I never really got any further than a few meters deep.

At least never deep enough for compression or whatever it's called to become a problem.

It's not the physics... but common sense and a wee bit of reading. I write software, but a cursory look tells me this is bogus.

But that's why I said that it might work if you remain in shallow water conditions like in shallow water emergency conditions or in shallow water recreational activities.

It seems to me you people are wholly dissing the device because you can't dive down into the Mariana Trench with it.

Perhaps I was out of line (sorry about the comment), but I was just expecting a little bit of reading before saying it "might work if you remain in shallow water". That implied a little thinking on your part in defence of it. We're in 2014 with the whole internets available. Retained knowledge has nothing to do with it. I bet you could give me an engineering or medical topic and I could gather a cursory knowledge using internet resources without formal study.

Again... sorry I hit a nerve.

WTF?

I was simply pointing out that the article possibly refers to breathing normally without any special training or technical skill, unlike currently technology.

I for one would be very interested if that was the case as I love the concept of diving, but simply cannot handle the act of using the scuba gear as I simply cannot breathe comfortably aka safely.

Okay, so 5m? It's silly. I prefer following the liquid breathing concept that is coming along leaps and bounds...

I don't know hey, for noobs like myself I figure 5m would be plenty even if only for an introduction.

Some people don't want to go check out the Titanic, we just want to spend some time in the sea checking out the wild life.

It's the difference between being Bear Grilles or just visiting the Kruger National Park.

I'm still trying to figure out this technical technique you refer to with current SCUBA, it's straight forward, breath in/breath out, with modern regs the effort of breathing is minimal.

Perhaps i'm being a bit insensitive today with my posts (feels like it after reading my posts to Picard)... but there's nothing technical about breathing with SCUBA gear. In fact if I kidnapped you while you were sleeping, shoved a mask on your face, stuck a reg in your mouth and threw you in a pool, you'd do just fine.

It's the "other" stuff that gets technical... like how long you can stay at certain depths, how deep you can go on a second dive if your first dive was x deep for y minutes etc.

Isn't there an app for all that technical stuff?
