ODS launches uncapped ADSL solution

IS were offering a special to 512k satellite users to upgrade to fibre for about R500 pm more IIRC ( I don't have the email here ).

Existing 512Kbps Satellite users can upgrade their service to IS Business ADSL Fibre 512Kbps for an additional R449 per month. They will pay only R1,799 instead of the normal list price of R2,500. This will result in a saving of R701 per month!
 
The Question being, aren't they just reselling IS fiber solutions?, and I would love to read their terms and conditions about downloading 24/7 @ 4mbps per second, that equates to approx 1265GB per month. I'm sure they would terminate your account after the first month

Secondly how can they gaurentee a contention ratio of 4:1, with telkoms contention ratio on the DSLAM?
 
no offense Myadsl but i think youve got ur finger in this pie, thats not a good deal, sounds to me like n scheme to get that Land Rover youve always wanted, sorry pal, *finger* move along.

I did contact them and this offer is not available. If you could send me the email I would like to see if they will stick to their side of the deal.

ODS offers two types of Fiber solutions, 1 on the IS backbone and 1 on their own backbone.
 
On the IS 1mb uncapped you can often achieve speeds of 4Mbps. Would speed be *strictly* limited to the purchased speeds on ODS?

There is still no affordable solution for high-end users who wish to use their line at its maximum speed, but neither need nor want the capacity to download 1265Gb a month. Less than a tenth of that would suffice. With ODS, however, one could end up spending >R150/Gb which is ludicrous.

Come on, ISP's you can come up with something better than this, surely?
 
This just epitomizes the terrible state of affairs in telecoms and connectivity in South Africa.

Yet we chase the corporates away that want to land cables on our doorstep cause they don't look like Ivy!

The thing with a DSLAM is that it has a maximum of 8MB/s (megabytes) download. This may seem a lot, but if you have understand that the DSLAM takes up to 48 ports. That only gives about 1.3mbps per port MAX if everyone if downloading at the same time.

Another thing is that I am sure you did not include the traffic that you can upload as well. I am guessing that you won't have anything more than 512kbps upload. This amounts to another 158GB at full tilt. Being realistic, I would say about 80GB upload to compliment the 1265GB download, which gives you about 1.34TB!!!

Which ISP is gonna allow that? I work at a ISP and we have approx 1300 clients and they did about 726GB last month. This includes a high volume outgoing call center that makes international calls via the internet that also comes up as usage on our bill.
 
And what this suppose to do? cause it's not worth the efford to get as it's overpriced.

SolConnect have a number of different uncapped solutions on the SAIX backbone, however subject to a fair-usage policy. There are no speed limits or setup fees or contracts.

They have shaped, unshaped, and local-only uncapped with different packages for lower or higher usage requirements.

I use the standard shaped and local-only packages (to split my traffic) and it suits my needs.

Their unshaped uncapped packages range between R2495 and R9995 per month - but like I said - there is a fair usage policy attached.

Too much. And no clarity at all on what constitutes "fair use". This is a general problem with SAIX, however, because of the "per-gig" wholesale packages rather than reselling a complete "account" as IS does. Pooling would work on a SAIX level, but I can't see it being too successful at an ISP level.

I guess we need to see more competition in the wholesale market before we see any bulk discounting for end-users.

At the moment I get about 100Gb a month. 80% is local. By mixing and matching several different account and splitting traffic between them. It costs about R1100, or R11/Gb. It would be great if an ISP could offer me one account that does all this without the shaping, throttling, top-ups and other garbage that goes with so-called "uncapped". I don't even mind paying per gig as long as every gig is not "assumed" to be international traffic.

It is difficult to give exact figures for fair-usage on a pooling system. However we have tried to base our packages on general fair usage (taking international norms into account too) and this would cover most users except for those on the extreme high-end that would require more than anyone could provide at a reasonable price.

We are all unfortunately hamstrung by the ridiculous wholesale system and prices of SAIX.

But we are at least trying to be more innovative and trying as best we can to meet the requirements of the market while being restricted by Telkom/SAIX.

We would love to be able to differentiate between local and international traffic and provide just one package. Unfortunately SAIX does not currently have the systems in place to do this.

Splitting local and international traffic as you do is the only option at this point in time. By mixing and matching packages on the IS and SAIX backbones (international and local) as you do you are able to cut down on costs quite a bit.

We can provide international and local-only SAIX packages (both with the same basic username and password but still two connections :() that provide similar but we would not be able to meet the price due to the wholesale costs on SAIX.

We, like you, are hoping for an improvement to wholesale ADSL prices in this country so that we can all get ADSL as it is meant to be!

726GB / 1300 = aprox 0.558GB per user - wow now that is allot !!! ;)
