Office 2010 shared .xlsx issue.

Hi,

We have a shared .xlsx file on a network folder.

The share on the workbook randomly disappears and then the sheet is locked for editing (like a normal unshared workbook till I put the share back again).

Any idea why this happens?
Bloody irritating.

Would have to check the server share monitoring and see what user is locking up the file

Wouldn't an Access DB work better if you want multiple people to access it at the same time?
Linking the Access DB to a MySQL DB would provide even better backup possibilities.

Have had the same issue many times before. Haven't found a real cause or solution :(

What you can try is share and then protect the share so that only you can change that setting. Think you can do that but not sure..

Yeah you'll have to drop the sharing. Multiple people working on the same thing in IT is always a recipe for disaster.

This is why dev crews run hardcore CVS...and even then its often a shtstorm of conflicting versions.

Also, the locked for editing thing is an Office "feature"....

You will not be able to fix this...its an age old IT problem. Work around it...preferably by changing the process to drop the sharing.

Can you not rather share a folder?

It is in a shared folder on our server.
The workbook also needs to be shared as 2 people edit it and 2 people view it (that also occasionally edit it).

The problem is the share in the excel sheet itself goes away.
Nobody is doing it, one minute it's a shared workbook, the next it is not a shared workbook. Nothing wrong with the shared folder.

only 4 people use it and old data gets moved out of it to stop it from getting to big (1 person uses it via VPN).

I'll look into that and see if I can, thanks for a pointer :)

We are moving everyone onto a CRM that will do what this sheet does (and plenty more) but until then they need it to work.
