Office chair

There's always a point where you are spending too much on something for just plain luxury. Like buying a Rolce Royce for comfort for a few Mil. Or buying a 60" 4k TV for R100k. Or buying a chair for R7k+ in this case. Those are thing for people that are rich and earn more than the average person.

hahaha agreed... Im not earning a lot pm. Well I just got new job and starting next month, but I have saved up a bit but would like to get decent enough chair. 7k seems a bit crazy.

R7k for a home chair is ridiculous..

But don't expect the ones from Game/Makro/Decofurn to last very long.

I have one, its lasted 2 years (with me fixing things myself), when my study is done I will be dropping R3k give or take on a decent chair that should last about 5 years easily.

The home office chair needs to be retired. It died due to a masters degree and a lot of AIC. Makro, house and home have bad quality chairs. I haven't find a nice chair yet. No wobbling and strong back support.

Serious answer: I think many people underestimate how important a good chair is for your health. I agree that R7,000 for a chair seems excessive at first, but when you compare it to other expenses it's not really that bad for something that will last you.

Not so serious answer: You clearly haven't reached R10k/day CEO level yet, i pity your poverty spec lifestyle.

haha play nice.

I agree with health benefits, YET I cant sit in that chair and test it. what is point of buying a R3k+ seat online that cant sit on and test. if it comes and I hate it... what does that help?

Going to go see decofurn maybe the weekend and see what goes for what. also would like to test one of the Getone seats but they are very pricey but I would consider it and save up for it, if worth my while.

I'll second Ergotherapy.

Well priced and very decent chairs.

Decofurn sell cheap **** with absolutely zero ergonomic design.

Get one will normally bring a chair for you to demo. If you weren't buying just one they would have probably left you one for a week.

good to know. So then I will then ask them about the chair that could give it a test run. Then ill save up or just take the plunge now and get it... and live on bread and water rest of the month ahahaha.

We all know a good chair is important. But, 98% of us can't afford it. Or, we can buy it and just eat bread for the next month or 2, which is very unhealthy and much more likely to give health problems :p

On the other hand, would you spend R50k - R100k on a mattress to keep your butt cheeks in position until you're 110 years old? You at least spend 8 hours a day on that. Which I think is more important than a chair.

You can have bread and water on the GetOne chair too. :D

To the bolded bit, I say yes, considering I spend far more time in bed than in my car. :p (not that I won't spend a fair bit on the car too). In fact I attribute my exceptionally aesthetic arse to 20% genetics and 80% good mattress.

I had spinal fusion last year Feb and got a chair very similar to http://www.makro.co.za/office-and-stationery/-stanford-high-back-chair-256856EA from Game for about R1200. Decent chair for me, although I don't mistreat my stuff and I'm not a heavy person.

You say you have a weak lower back? EXERCISE!!

ouch!

yet easier said than done, I was born with weaker than normal back (Mother as well was born with it)

I have been to physios and exercised etc. always comes to point and just starts hurting more than anything else. And considering I had pretty huge accident that basically doesnt allow me to run for more than 300m, i think it isnt best idea to exercise.

Had motocross accident, crushed my pelvis and was bed bound for a month and wheel chair for 2.

I am young person, these might sound like excuses I know. But doesnt change fact. I am currently seeing a chiro every 2weeks and doing little posture changes to see if that couldnt ease the lower back a bit.

just hope a proper seat could assist in my pain.

I think I am going for then Getone, just waiting for response.

You must strengthen your core! They're are very simple exercises that will take you no longer than 30mins and you don't even have to go to a gym.

If you think the Aeron is expensive you should check out the Embody. Just don't sit in one because they're amazingly comfortable and you might find yourself wanting to buy one..

Those Herman Miller Chairs also come with a 12 year warranty, and they're designed to be easily serviced. I agree spending that kind of money on a chair seems crazy, but you do have to consider how much time you spend sitting and that sitting is actually a particularly stressful position for your body. You don't however necessarily need a very expensive chair, it just happens to be the case that the more expensive ones are usually the ones that have decent adjustability.

Definitely consider a chair that gives the option to tilt the seat forward. It feels weird, but is in fact a more natural position. What you definitely do not want is to follow the old advice of sitting with your back 90 degrees to your thighs.

I'll also advise not to bother with the rubbish that discount stores sell. They're cheaper because they're junk. In the long run they're also more expensive.

That's an invalid comparison. The correct one is between a cheap, bad mattress and a quality one. The prices for each are quite similar to chairs. If you think a quality chair is not important or less important than a quality mattress then you have no idea what you're talking about. Do some reading on the mechanics of sitting.

First off, mattresses are expensive. More expensive than chairs. R20k on a mattress is a usually a good one. The same goes for a a chair for R3k, it's still a decent chair. When you go to R7k for a chair, you are paying for luxury, just as when you'll pay R50k for a mattress for the luxury and comfort. So the comparison is valid, just a more expensive product in general. If you do sit on the same chair for more than 6 hours a day, then you need a new job! However, most people do sleep on the same mattress mostly for 8 hours a day, so it is more important than a chair! A good chair is important, but a good mattress even more based on the time you spend on it. And if you are really anal about the "mechanics of sitting", go do some reading on the Ergonomics of sitting.

I want to convert my home study with a lazy boy type recliner, as the most ergonomic sitting position for your back is at a 135° recline. Just need to figure out how to modify my desk with a keyboard/mouse tray setup.

as I am also in the market for a decent chair in the stipulated price range, but in the durban area
