Red cards will have a big impact on the earnings of Cell C Sharks players that are sent off following a decision made by the Board of the Sharks Directors this week.
Springboks Bismarck du Plessis, Frans Steyn and Jean Deysel are all off the field at present as they serve out suspensions handed to them after they were red carded in recent matches.
As per the previous agreement, those players are still drawing on their salaries even though they aren’t on the field, but that is to change going forward.
The Durban media has quoted Chairman of the Board Stephen Saad as being in agreement with the Sharks supporters that the “reckless” play of some of the players recently was intolerable. Saad told The Mercury newspaper that this was the reason his organisation had decided to act.
“We have decided that going forward there must be a policy of ‘no play, no pay’ should a player be suspended for foul play,” said Saad.
Saad said that to enforce this, players being contracted to the union in future would be asked to have the ‘no play, no pay’ clause inserted in their contracts. Saad said the Board had taken legal advice before introducing the new censure, which he said was “appropriate and will have the necessary teeth”.
It still needs to be implemented and actually considered in relation with the law, club/union constitution etc. The Union must draw this up within their constitution and any new contract must abide therein by an added clause. IIRC (pending on the union/club), currently players which don’t play have to participate in training, administration etc. Now when the players have to consider a ‘no play, no pay’ policy in their new contracts, they will argue against their other union/club participation (basically their roles and responsibilities). Remember that sports are also employment.
True, I would suggest that no pay is a bit harsh, however a significant reduction in earnings would be appropriate.
