Spies: Lions used wrong ball

Vodacom Bulls captain Pierre Spies says the Lions should not have been allowed to take a quick restart in the last minute of Saturday's match at Ellis Park.

The Lions caught the Bulls by surprise and were able to regain possession and win a penalty, from which they scored the match-winning try.

Spies said the Lions, according to rugby's laws, should have used the same ball that was used by Jacque-Louis Potgieter to kick his sixth penalty goal that gave the Bulls an 18-15 lead.


'We should have secured possession at the last restart, but the Lions used another ball which may have caused us to lose concentration,' Spies told Netwerk24. 'I didn’t have time ask the referee [Jaco van Heerden] about it.'

2.6 Spare balls

Spare balls may be available during a match, but a team must not gain or attempt to gain an unfair advantage by using them or changing them.

According to the SA REF. Association there is no law that says that drop-outs, penalties, etc. must be taken with the ball that was in play up till then. Apparently Law 2.6 covers unusual use, rules which are thoroughly covered in Rugby sevens (a rugby union variant).

The Blues are on form outplaying a good Brumbies team. There are still 40min to go, but the Blues deserve their lead.

Saw something else that's quite nuts - Beauden Barrett has 670 odd SR points, which is 4th of all time among active players, and 13th overall (with inactive players included). And he's only 23!
