Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

They use IS for their Backbone so any traffic Internally to IS, latency is really small ie Twilight server(warcraft 3 Private game server)
Anything other than local IS , ie SAIX or international is high latency.
They don't shape their paid packages.

I don't know which is better atm for international response time used to be SAIX as IS had mostly Sat links but now with the new Fibre from Eassy and seacom donno.
Would have to ask around. All the ISP's use another ISP shown in http://www.ispmap.org.za/

enjoy

Thanks. Thought of SAIX, but rather pricey. If it's not shaped as they say, then it should be ok. Shot

Initially you will be getting our standard service. (i.e.
certain ports are shaped somewhat and web and email are
prioritised.)

After you have moved 30 GBs you will be moved into a
different category whereby certain ports will be shaped
more aggressively. However, web and email will still be
prioritised.

After moving a total of 60 GBs you will be moved into a
different category where your line speed is throttled to
1024 kbps per second and certain shaping protocols are in
place.

After moving a total of 90 GBs then you will be moved
into a category where you will be throttled to 512 kbps.
Certain shaping protocols will also be in place here.

After moving a total of 120 GBs you will be moved into a
category where your line will be throttled to 386 kbps.
Certain shaping protocols will also be in place here.

After moving a total of 150 GBs you will be moved into a
category where you are throttled to 128 kbps.

You will never be capped.

I am currently in the 60Gb category which should still give me browsing speeds of around 1024k, but experiencing less than 10 years ago's dial up speeds...

  • NOT downloading s hit 24/7
  • NOT seeding torrents 24/7
  • Just streaming the occasional video
  • Normal browsing & e-mail

I moved from a capped service (50+ Gb per month) purely for cost saving purposes, now I can't even browse webpages or check e-mail?
This is total, utter BS!
Everybody's blaming the Seacom outage, but why then does a local ping on my Telscum and WA accounts show 29ms and 42ms whilst AH comes to more than 899ms and even timing out?

I suddenly remember why I moved my webhosting away from these clowns to another provider about 4 years ago...

I have to admit that I was quite upset with the T&C change from Afrihost, and I was really upset with the issues we experienced when the SEACOM outage started. I logged a ticket and the support person gave me a copy-and-paste-from-the-generic-list-of-crappy-support-answers type of email.

However it seems that you made a plan and we are now getting a awesome speeds (not on the proxy), thank you!!!!! I was able to download Linux SUSE 11.3 in record time (for a 384 line). (is that selfish of me)

why didnt you let us know that the issues are temporarily solved? Your site still recommends using the proxy even though it is not needed (and the proxy is as slow as cancer )

Good day

I have a client whos email is not being delivered.

On closer inspection, header information revealed that the IP 196.210.253.11 had been blacklisted. This can be verified at http://www.mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=blacklist:196.210.253.11

This issue has been on going for over a week now. Tech support, logically, suggest that resetting the modem will allocate a new (not blackliosted) IP. This is not working.

Any help/suggestions would be most appreciated.

196.210.253.11 Belongs to Internet Solutions so you obviously use IS connection with their smtp details.

The big players like IS and Telkom very often get their IP addresses blacklisted to the best is to use your web hosting IP address or the smtp details they provided. smtp.afrihost.com or mail.afrihost.com.

If you have a hosted email address there is to options for smtp. Either the connection side smtp details (faster but prone to blacklisting) or hosting side smtp (slower but not easily blacklisted unless it's one of those ISP's that don't care about hosting spammers)

Hi Frank

The mail is hosted with ipage.com in the USA, and those smtp and pop details are used, hence my confusion in getting the mail blocked. The header IP provided the clue.

Deleting the mail account in Outlook and setting it up again seems to have sorted the problem out. I hope that helps someone with a similar issue.
