Hi

2 questions about bandwidth - really newbie questions :-(

If my cellular service provider is Vodacom, do I have to buy bandwidth from them. It seems like there are lots of providers offering 3g bandwidth at lower prices - or does this not apply to Hero data transfer?

Is there any way to use my ADSL line to download apps, data, updates etc to my Hero rather than using expensive data bundle?

Thanks
Brendon

1. Yes, if it is Vodacom you would only be able to buy from Vodacom or whoever else supplies bundles for them. What do you mean by data transfer?

2. AFAIK Wi-Fi is one form of using your ADSL.

Ok, I can't seem to boot my Magic into recovery mode, it just shows me a triangle with a exclamation mark in it with a little icon of the phone.

Does anybody know how to get into recovery mode with the magic?

I need it to install 1.6 and the cyanogen mod.

@DJNgoma

Thanks for the response.
Data transfer - I mean all information moving to and from my phone other than cellular calls and SMS's. For example, sending and receiving emails, downloading apps, syncing data with online services (google calendar) etc.

I am assuming that all this traffic moves via 3G?

The other question was could I go:

Hero --> Wi-Fi --> ADSL router --> ADSL line --> ISP for downloading and upload data?

Thanks
Brendon

Next question...

I am looking for a way to transcribe cellphone voicemail to email (ideally) or SMS (less ideal). I know of spinvox, but does the android universe have something that WORKS IN SA?

Thanks

1. With data transfer I would assume that it would utilise any connection to the internet, but maybe somebody here can confirm.

2. The diagram will work.

Brendon, yes you can. I do that with my Magic and it switches from 3G to my Wi-Fi router nicely when I am in range.

Works well. Most of my downloads on the G1 was from home over the WiFi as that was MUCH cheaper. I actually set up my RSS feeds to only automatically update when I was on WiFi.

It routes through WiFi if available, but was confused at work because the work proxy requires additional authentications, so while I could use WiFi there VNC and telnet or copy from my laptop, I could not access the internet without going through the proxy.

This basically disabled any internet activity while I was connected to that router.

Quick question for those using NDrive (GPS) - Is there any way to search for a street name, without specifying the town?

Say you aren't sure of the town, how can you search for a street name?

Hi there
I'm hoping you guys clear something.

I'm due for an upgrade soon and the payin on my contract for the HERO is R2k+ so I was looking at cheaper alternatives like the Magic and the tattoo (I want a change from s60).

I know that the magic doesn't have sense UI and the tattoo isn't capacitive screen nor does it have office viewers.

If the software is updated on the Magic (Dunno if Leaf will release an update or if flashing with HERO liek ROM from xda) then there should not be a difference between the Magic and the Hero except for hardware differences: 3.5mm headphone, the 5MP cam vs 3MP and the slightly larger battery on HERO.

Is anyone using the Magic with sense UI/android 2+, and is there a difference compared to HERO?

Am I right about the only differences being the hardware if software is flashed?

same chip speed yeah, and 3mp camera and no jack plug and no sense ui

its still an awesome phone

Damn, I've installed and re-installed the USB driver 4 times now and everything looks fine except it's not picking up my device for some reason.

/pulls out hair

I'll check on my windows 7 or Linux machine tonight, maybe one of them will pick it up.

And yes, USB debugging IS switched on, on the phone

EDIT, ok, restarted the adb daemon and now it picks up my device.

ok, weird problem up kvi's street :D

After I boot into Fastboot and try to install the recovery image with the command

Code:
fastboot boot recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2H.img

I get the output

Code:
downloading 'boot.img'...

but nothing else. I left the phone like this for 10 minutes but no difference even though the doc's say it should only take a few seconds.

Anybody that can maybe help?

Does anyone else have the problem with nDrive (the uhhhh.........most available version) being dreadfully soft in the voice department? Does a newer version help this? I also find it a little iffy to try and search for a place (that is, it doesn't find fourways mall in poi search but DOES find the McDonalds there)

Any better Nav packages for SA? Thought about copilot (and there site says they have SA maps) but can't find it in the market :/

[EDIT] Nvm, turns out "Media Volume" affects Ndrive as well. Still interested in other packages though if anyone knows as the POI search is iffy and it's missing quite a few streets [/EDIT]

My Ndrive is also really soft. I cranked the media volume, and the software volume is max, but it still fairly soft.

Hi
A question about rooting...

Is rooting the phone and changing to another ROM such as Modaco part of the same process? Is it possible to root a phone and still leave the operating system unchanged?

Thanks
Brendon

Another question...

How would I decide between the various ROMs?
Are some better than others, and in what way?

Thanks
Brendon
