You root the rom, not the phone. Roms you flash (not official) are already rooted.

Some roms are still in Beta, others are stable. Some are faster than others.

I am on this Rom:

Its fast and stable. I am not looking for cutting edge stuff, just a rom for daily use. Please before you flash this rom read everything 10 times over and make sure you understand everything. You will need the Hero's recovery, radio and spl before you can flash this.

but nothing else. I left the phone like this for 10 minutes but no difference even though the doc's say it should only take a few seconds.

I flashed my recovery using the unlockr 's one click root method. http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/

Discovered a really nice app on the market called my tracks. It can basically record any trip you take, and provide stats, graphs etc. It can even export to google maps, docs, gpx files, kml files etc. Check the demo video:

im playing with google navigation at the moment. seems to be working great. going to play some more with it this afternoon

It's very cool, I used it to map my way when we tried to find our way through a hedge grown maze a few weeks ago. I looks nice when you show the route in the Google earth view

I assume this is on the 2.1 build? Does it work ok in SA?
 
yeah was on villian rom. seems like when we DO eventually get the official 2.1 hero rom then google navigation is for US only.

hence another good reason we all root our phones

This issue was driving me nuts on my newly acquired Magic, couldn't even login in to Google or Facebook. Thanks to your tip I'm sorted and loving the Magic every minute.
 
picked up a nexus 1 in Hong Kong. R4000. works PERFECT here so far. !!!!!!! :)
 
you guys HAVE to play Air Control .... an air traffic control game off market.

this thing has me addicted..
