Hey guys.... ive just moved over from the very successful X1 thread :), bought myself an HTC Magic, blown away by android and its potential, and reckoned lets start us an Android users thread.

So those on this amazing OS, why not chime in and lets see how many of us there are to start.

how many Android phones are on the market here now? just the Magic, Dream and Hero?

I'm really considering rooting my Magic with a custom ROM. Perhaps we could have a bit of discussion about the pro's and cons. Particularly, how to reduce the risk you run by loosing your warranty.

Specifically, under what circumstances would I need to send my phone in for repair and not be able to put the Leaf Rom back first AND that leaf would be able to see that I have a custom ROM?

Eg, if the screen goes, could I put the official ROM back blind so that when Leaf put the new screen in they will see their ROM, etc

In circumstances where Leaf wouldn't be able to boot the device without flashing it, it's not an issue because how would they ever know what ROM I had?

Loosing the warranty on an R8000 phone is a big downside...

On another note, I've been trying FreshFace on my Magic. I really like it - nice re-skinning, up to 9 screens etc

One tip though, once Freshface is running, go to the phone settings->applications->manage->home and clear data. This means that only freshface is running, not the default Home as well. If I do this I don't get any lag at all

yeah on my windows mobile devices i was able to undo my custom flashes and take phone back to softSPL so warranty was covered.
im trying to "learn" this new setup and i also wont touch it till all ducks in a row.

yeah i saw something about freshface.... i wanna try it too? where did you find it? im trying to find aHOME but i can only find the mini/lite version. i know i would have to pay for the full version but gosh i cant find it anywhere. my android market only shows free apps????? and when i go to the actuall aHome webpage there is also no info on where this app can be purchased or downloaded.

is freshface free?

Freshface is in the Market (you need to upgrade to leaf's new ROM at www.leaf.co.za to get the full Market)

ahome and openhome are paid apps so we don't get them. However, freshface is a fork of one of them, I think ahome.

Personally, I think freshface reduces the need to use a custom ROM, although the multi touch and social integration of the Hero looks awesome

duncan what version of software did you install from leaf.... i already have market so i think i may have the latest version

nothing beats a custom rom. especially when you can fake the provider and then have access to the paid-market - some great apps there.

once you start flashing radio and custom SPL, you can kiss your warranty goodbye. If you put a custom recovery image on and do a nandroid backup, you will be able to get back to the original ROM. remember that once you mess with the SPL/radio too often, you stand a chance of bricking it for good (very slim though)

if you only have the Open Market then you need to upgrade. The Android Market app is called Market and has thousands of apps. That's what you want.

What does 'flashing radio' mean?

Guys, do any of you know whether there is a proper GPS navigation program available for SA on android?

I would also like to know. I know there is a Copilot version for Android, but I don't think there's SA maps available. The only one I can think of that might have SA maps is Nav4all, which is free but doesn't store maps on the phone. It downloads while navigating.

Cyanogen firmware - Highly recommended!

I've used AndNav2 for navigation, since it can store the maps on your phone, but it doesn't support real-time nav for South Africa :(

MapDroyd is looking nice, with vector-based maps, but isn't very functional yet, and also doesn't give real-time nav.

hey Pyro, i wanna do they Cyanogen firmware flash.

is it pretty safe? you rate it quite easy? i used to flash ROMS to my x1 so i dont think im too much a dummy :)
