OFFICIAL Android thread

Most Android phones are at 1.5.
The Droid is the only one that's officially at 2.0.

HTC have decided to skip 1.6, 2.0 - as the updates are too minor to port the Rosie interface.

They have decided to got straight to 2.1, which has substantial updates to all previous versions.

Should be out roughly first half of 2010.

Otherwise, you could always install a beta 2.1 rom onto your Hero....
:D

PS.
Getting my Hero come payday
:)

@ Buzda: You should gooi a nice Hero ROM on the G1 and then you'll be able to do all you want.

Hero on the Dream... Sounds good- what are the warranty implications? I'd give it a go were it my phone, but it's the GFs...

As for VOIP being illegal- not sure that's the case, though MTN have in their T&Cs a clause that subscribers using VOIP can be charged ~R20 per MB  AFAIK, this has never been enforced though. Either way, I use SAINET (R89 for 300MB of 3G :D)

What VOIP app works on the Hero? Is there absolutely nothing for the Dream?? Frikken Google- I thought they were all about free access to stuff. Seems big business steered them away from their original company ideals... Saf really :(

What are the features of 2.1? But just judging from the version numbers I don't think the update will be that substantial as opposed to the jump from 1.6 to 2.0.

Okay so I managed to find this link: This will get you threw the whole process pretty easy. theunlockr.com is the same site I used(Very good)

NOTES:

Before you load the downgraded ROM try and do a Nandroid backup first so that we can upload it for future use. Before you can do a nandroid backup you have to install the patched recovery image on your device

Create your Gold Card excactly like they say otherwise it won't work. When you open the sd card to see if it worked there will still be a footprints folder. Just leave it it's normal.

When you come to the part where you need to download the RUU choose the alternative one found on this link

Otherwise you will just use your bandwith for the RUU that doesn't work on our SA Roms.

hero on dream? careful there ! ive seen discussions where hero on dream is laggggggy, coz the hardware cant handle it properly. unfortunately the dream is first generation google phone, weve come a long way since then.

Anyone got the ndrive update from the market? I hope it will work because it's downloading loads of voices and crap... 223MB o_0

Has anyone got an idea where I can get a HTC Dream for cheap, like R2000. I just busted my Sony Ericsson K850i's screen and really dont think its worth paying R600 to get it repaired. Been eyeing the Dream for a while now and just read the entire thread, now I want to get one so badly! I've been looking on BidOrBuy, also on JunkMail and Gumtree (but a bit scared of scams). Please if anyone could let me know, I'd really appreciate it!

what sort of money you prepared to splash? i would seriously skip the first generation google phone "the dream" and go for something like tattoo (budget android) or hero (non budget)

About R2000 max :D Don't think I'll get one for that price, unless its a real bargain.... *sigh*

hey peeps!

sorry to bug, just have a question...

i have background data running on my magic just for email push and such...

apart from battery drain, how much data do you think background data uses in a month?

500 kb?

It will depend on the amount of mails received and the size of the e-mail, also the download frequency settings. You can also set the mail size limit! The best will probably be to get Watchdog 3G from the market so that you can monitor all your mobile usage.

yeah i think it will definately be more than just 500k

google services is checking every couple seconds for new mails etc.

Ndrive has been released to the market. Can anyone help me regarding the maps?

I know I'm late to the party here but I was so close to checking the Nexus at BarCamp in Lusaka but from what I've caught on the web it looks quite nice.

I am running NDrive. Not sure what issues you have. You just have to download the app from the market and then within the application there is a store function (under My NDrive) where you can purchase maps. The Southern Africa map pack (includes SA and all surrounding countries) costs EUR 70 and is quite up-to-date. Navigation works well and GPS-fix is now a lot faster than previous versions.

oh my !!! is this a way to get legit ndrive on my android? wooot

gonna load now. i support legit :)

Could I get opinions on which phone to choose: Motorola Milestone or HTC Hero and reasons why you choose your selection. If this requires a new thread, then I'll gladly delete this post and use it in the new thread that is created.
