Official Everton supporters thread

so odd considering last season Everton was firing all cylinders after Moyes left... now they look like their old self... least they not playing like Liverpool - Lovren the new Carra :D

Everton have already lost 8 games. I haven't watched much of them this year at all.
Martinez was hailed by players and fans alike last year.
They haven't lost any major players from last season and they strengthened their squad.
How has their general play been? I expected them to kick on from last season.

I called this last season when everyone was drooling over Martinez. I said his Wigan sides always played with gusto, but lacked defensive organisation and thus shipped goals at a rapid rate. I also said it would be interesting to see if he could maintain Moyes' stout defensive unit and build on it as it was aging. Early signs are, he can't.

The heart of Everton's defence is old (their first-choice centreback pairing is 69-years old) and has no pace centrally without Stones, with Jags, Distin and Alcaraz being easily and frequently beaten for pace. Factor in the decline in defensive organisation (see above what I said about Martinez at Wigan) and you have the recipe for a leaky defence. It isn't helped by the fact that Martinez is now showing he may be no different to what Moyes was accused of; lacking a 'Plan B', or more accurately in his case, a stubborn refusal to develop or revert to 'Plan B'. Martinez insists on getting his team to play in a Guardiolaesque manner. He insists on them passing the ball out from the back and inviting pressure, which his team cannot cope with. A number of the goals they concede come from situations they play themselves in to.

The reality is Everton may need to revert to the Moyes' brand of football that served them well for years to halt the slide. Just keep it simple, play direct and put your foot through the ball when under pressure. Halfway through the season, 4 points clear of the drop and joint second worst defence? It is time to be concerned. Wigan went down playing not half-bad looking football.

It seems like it's not the season for BR and RM type football. Both these managers seem unwilling to learn from their defensive mistakes. Quite funny actually, the red and blue sections of Merseyside play with the exact same philosophy.
