Official Fallout 4 Thread

I must admit - I'm starting to miss the lush colours and scenery of Skyrim. Everything is so damn brown. Also, after trying to fence Sanctury I think I am done with settlement building. Really need a decent tool to build fences.

The Fallout series is pretty good, but the fact that it delays the Elder Scrolls series significantly makes me resent it a bit.

The settlement building is extremely Annoying but other than that quite a cool game so far. My laptop struggles in places like the raider stronghold, but is fine in the open world, weird.

I am not a 60fps snob si I am really surprised at how well my Y5070 with the 860M is handling things.

Playing on High with view distances cranked up to max, God Rays on high and shadows and lighing on Ultra I haven't seen my fps drop below 30.

Fences are a pain. I tried a small section and could only get it to zigzag, not straight. So just built some turrets instead :)

But yeah, this settlement building is more of a pain than anything at this stage. It might be worth it later when you have traders and all of that going, but it will take a while.

One other thing that annoys me, it seems that each settlement has it's own storage? So when you build at a new settlement you have to transfer the material from another settlement before building. Would have liked it if they were all linked so that you can use all the materials at all settlements.

Also played a little bit last night. In 2 hours of play I've probably died about 200 times already :)

After playing a bit more I understand this statement. Tried to clear a bunch of raiders, got my ass handed to me. Then I fetched my power armor and did some weapon upgrades and it was so much easier. I definitely need some better normal armor though.

You can link them with supply lines / brahmin caravans. Need the Local Leader perk for that, though. Some Googling ought to provide more info.

I used metal 'shack walls' for most of my barricade in Sanctuary. Looks great and quite easy to place.

I just closed off vulnerable areas in Sanctuary with the junk walls and kill zones with wire fence and turrets pointing down at them. For guard posts I used the first prefab wood construction with a ladder attached :)
These are at my two gates, guards are on them with a turret each. Also got a few turrets in town in case they break through which super mutants have done.
All in all the settlement building is a pain, especially getting power through a whole house took me a while to kind of wire one right

Played for about 6 hours in-game time or about 7 real world hours (having to go back to previous saves).

I'm really enjoying the game thus far. Still die a lot, but upgrading weapons and armour helped tremendously.

Felt like I wasted a lot of time on Sunday looking for copper. Struggled with wiring stuff too.

One mistake I made was to only put upgrade points into primary SPECIAL attributes and not taking perks. Needed a perk at a stage and had to wait to level before I could get it. I'm sure there was a way to get around it, but I couldn't be bothered with trying to get overly creative.

Did some basic settlement stuff, but nothing extraordinary yet. Focussing on growing food for the moment.

Running it on a Y5070 with GTX960M, everything on ultra, except I turned off motion blur and lens flare (hate it)(though running at 1280x720 and not 1080p), haven't seen my fps drop enough for me to notice.
Quite well optimized for Nvidia cards, wish they hadn't put in GameWorks though.
EDIT: and depth of field on standard, I start getting a headache after having it on for a while.

Fences are useless and don't actually contribute to your defense rating, just build some turrets and maybe fence them off, but i don't see any point in building fences around my settlements.

Also, get the Local Leader Perk , then you can set up trade routes which will immediately share the storage between settlements.

Here are some great tips, the part in the bold is the only reason why i wasted so much time building a fence around the radiation...but you can remove it!

Settlements

When building settlements you can raise and lower objects by holding E and using scroll wheel on PC, X and L1/R1 on PS4
When building your first settlement use E to move the initial workbenches instead of scrapping them.
You can remove the radiation from Starlight Drive by scrapping the barrels in the center, and the Unrusted Crashed Car.
Water pumps, farms, and traders deposit the Items and Caps they produce into the workbench.
To help place objects in hard places use a small rug then place the object on the rug, pick up the rug and the item will remain attached but the game uses the rugs collision detection.(This allows you to clip objects into walls!)
To assign settlers select them in the crafting screen then select the object you want them to work
Settlers can work up to 6 Food at a time. Meaning a settler can tend to 12 plants that produce .5 food each.
To reduce raider attacks make sure your defense state is higher than food + water.
Highlighting a settler in workshop mode will also highlight anything he's assigned to.
Fast Travel in between settlements will instantly grow all crops that have a settler assigned to them.
When your selecting something through the workshop build interface if you press and hold the move command(Press and hold [E]) this will pickup all items attached(or very close) to the object you are picking up. (Be careful as if your walls are all attached you can pickup very large parts of your settlement!)

General

Sell Fusion Cores to traders before they run out, you will get much more for a partially charged core, over an empty core.
Pickpocket enemies with power armor to steal their Fusion Cores, this will cause them to leave the armor, and you can steal the frame
The Lone Wanderer perk still provides bonuses with Dog Meat as a companion
When Leaving your power armor remove the Fusion Core so no one will decide to use it.
When hacking look for [],(), <>,and {} with anything in between the brackets, clicking the leftmost bracket will reset your attempts to give you more tries, or remove dud words from the list.
Try to always carry a weapon of each ammo type, that way you are less likely to be completely out of ammo.
Some companions can pick locks and hack terminals for you. More specifically: Cait for lockpicking, Nick Valentine for hacking
You can tag specific crafting materials by going into your junk section in your inventory, and switch to material view.
There is no level cap. Don't fret about spending perk points. The game's enemies don't scale with you, but they do get harder farther from the start, and the farthest away points of the map have level 50 enemies. There's no shortage of things to take down and no shortage of points to get strong enough to do it.
To force a companion to equip, or apparel switch to their inventory in the trade menu, and a button will show up to have the npc equip the item. ( "T" for PC, "Y" for Xbox, "Triangle" for PS4)
For Power Armor: sprinting, strong melee attacks and VATs drain your Fusion Core faster than walking or standing still.
Fast Travel in Power Armor doesn't use and Fusion Core battery, and you can still fast travel with no charge in the core.
You can zoom in on the pip boy by right clicking.

Some good tips.

On the selling of Fusion Cores, I am only offered 87 caps no matter what percentage it still has left. Not much so better to try and run them down to 1 or 2 % before replacing and then selling to a dealer.

I can buy them from the a guy in Diamond City for 460 caps after building up Charisma to 8 stars, before it was 700 he wanted.

I've also added 2 stars to the Locksmith perk which is really handy. I love picking locks now :D

Thanks for that info. My problem is I put almost no points into charisma, so getting the local leader perk will take quite a few levels.

finally figured out how the perks tree works.... could never understand what the levels were all about on the left, i thought it was what level i need to be.... now i know its the level of the perk i.e. strength level 1+, charisma 1+
