Official Google Nexus 7 Thread

Are there any solutions to the wifi disconnect issues?
I've given up trying to download Real Racing 3 over wifi because the connection just dies. And the only way to fix it is to turn wifi off and on again :(

So seeing that the N7 is 'incompatible' on the Play Store but yet works ok by loading the apk directly, is it Google dictating the incompatible angle?

The developer specifies what form factors their software is compatible with (or what features must be present on the hardware, such as front camera, rear camera etc). The store will list hardware as incompatible if it doesn't meet the requirements set down by the developer.

It's Whatsapp that'd have said that their software is not compatible with tablets

Fair enough. It just seems a bit odd that WhatsApp is available directly from WhatsApps own website. And with Google disabling things like the wifi hotspot feature for whatever reason, I'm just a bit suspicious of it all.

On a similar note, I got an sms today from Orange. Just some junk thing, but it showed up in the notification bar. So that's another thing Google have removed from our N7s software for whatever reason they may have, even though the function is still there.

Hey What roms are you guys running on your 3g devices, was looking at slimrom but seems some issues to sort out - Cyanogen?

I just joined the club! My 32GB 3G Google Nexus 7 arrived today via courier from Kalahari.com. I just need to get a microsim from 8ta and I'm set to go.

Can anyone tell me how to get Wifi Hotspot working, without rooting? I've never rooted any Android device and don't want to mess with the warranty.

Unfortunately you will have to root your precious N7 and flash a custom mod to get Wi-Fi Hotspot to work but
it's all worth it in the end. I rooted mine and installed the mod the same day I received it. Signed up for the 8ta 10GB pm deal that same day and haven't looked back ever since. It's a match made in heaven (to me at least) ...

thanx.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I can't get it into fasboot mode. According to the video, I should get a screen on the Nexus which asks whether I want to unlock the bootloader or not. I simply don't get that screen.

USB debugging is enabled and I can "reboot" the Nexus from the Toolkit. I get a screen with an Android on with options like "start", "Restart bootloader", "Recovery Mode" and "Power off".
Right at the bottom is says "LOCK STATE - LOCKED", in red.

This is on Windows 7 64bit.

Device Manager shows the "Android USB Device" with a yellow triangle but when I attempt to update the drivers (either automatically) or from the driver folder inside the "Google Nexus 7 ToolKit" folder on the HDD, it says "Windows has determined the driver for this device is up to date".

Has anyone run into this?

I never experienced this issue.

I did however follow these steps: (Copy and paste from forum link above)

The next steps are for enable recovery options in fastboot menu, so that you can install zip files and other options

  • 1. First download Google Nexus_7_ToolKit_v4.0.0 and install it
  • 2. It comes in this threat http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1809195
  • 3. After that enable USB debugging on nexus 7, to do that, go to "Settings > About tablet" and click several times in "Build number" it shoud say you are developer or something like that. Then go back to settings and in Developer options check the USB debugging mode.
  • 4. Then start Google Nexus 7 ToolKit on your pc, by default its installed in c:/Google Nexus 7 ToolKit/ToolKit.exe
  • 5. You can choose to update or not, but you can automatically update only if you donate.
  • 6. After that you have to choose the version of you nexus by introducing the number and then enter, in my case y use option (6. Android 4.2.1 build JOP40D) for 3g version (i dont know if it works in only wifi so do it under your own risk)
  • 7. Stop in the next screen and turn off your nexus, then turn it on in Fastboot mode, to do that i use (volume- and power button) first press volume down and holding press power on button and hold both buttons till a screen appers, and leave the nexus like this, and connect it to your pc via usb cable (be sure to have installed drivers when installing Nexus 7 Toolkit so that your pc recognices the nexus 7).
  • 8. Then back to the computer i choose option (8 1-click for all unlock, root, reneame, custon recovery, etc )
  • 9. Then select option 2 SuperSu by chainFire, cause when i did this i have android 4.2.1 on my nexus, the other option doesnt work for my version of android
  • 10. Then I choose option (1. Clockworkmod touch recovey) and after that it will ask you to confirm so write yes and then hit enter.
  • 11. Then wait till the process finish, and if everything go well you should see in your nexus aplications one called “SuperSU”

Then to enable tethering and hotspot :D

  • 1. Download the enabletether-JOP40D that stridger (The creator of the post(Thanks!!)) upload or the enabletether-JOP40C according to your nexus 7
  • 2. And connect your nexus 7 to your computer and save the “enabletether-JOP40D.zip” on the root directory of sdcard
  • 3. Then turn off your nexus 7 and turn it on in fastboot mode again pressing and holding volume down and power up.
  • 4. Then navigate through menu with volume up and volume down, to “Recovery Mode” and press power button to choose, then wait a little, it should show you a menu.
  • 5. Here choose “Install zip from sdcard” > Choose zip from sdcard > 0/ > enabletether-JOP40D.zip or wherever you save it and press power buttom to choose it, wait to the installation ends, and that’s all, reboot your nexus 7, and look for the option in Settings > More Settings > Tethering and portable hotspot

I hope this helps.

Cheers

Oh, I eventually got it working by manually installing the drivers (posted in that thread as well). Now I just need to find a free hotspot tethering app which doesn't have a 30 minute limit.....

Why do you need a 3rd party Hotspot app?
I'm using the default app and haven't experienced any timeout issues.

Just wondering...

There isn't any wifi hotpot options on the 4.2.1 Jelly Bean version of Google Nexus 7. At least not the one I use. I travel a lot with work and need to keep my cellphone handy for calls. Using it as a 3G hotspot drains the battery too quickly. Although I can do a lot with the tablet, I still need my laptop as well

Did you download and install the enabletether-JOP40D zip file as explained in the second part of the steps I posted previously? When you install that mod then the Wi-Fi Hotspot should be under Settings -> More -> Tethering & Personal Hotspot by default.

Yes, I tried that but get stuck here:

As soon as I boot into Recover Mode, I get an Android with a red triangle through it, and the words "No Command" and I have to powercycle it again.

Edit: None of the wifi tethering apps seem to work on my Google Nexus 7. I can connect with my laptop, but it doesn't get an IP address from the Nexus so there's no internet access.

Which recovery option are you using? Clockworkmod or TWRP?

I've also had the red triangle with "No Command" problem when I using TWRP recovery.
I re-flashed back to stock 4.2.1, installed the OTA upgrade to 4.2.2 and then started from scratch but then used Clockworkmod.

Everything worked fine after that. Remember to flash enabletether-JDQ39.zip when upgraded to 4.2.2

I would recommend upgrading to 4.2.2 first then flash enabletether-JDQ39.zip.

I honestly don't even know what you're referring to. i.e. I didn't recall using any "recovery options". I basically followed the steps you gave to root the tablet (with great effort) and then tried the ZIP file which didn't work.

Yeah! I finally got it working, after about the 4th time of completely resetting the tablet to factory defaults, and following the steps above. I also re-downloaded Google Nexus 7 Toolkit and wifi thether ZIP files, in case they were corrupted.
