Nope just install a custom recovery such as TWRP. You'll have to unlock the bootloader first which will erase everything on your device so just back it up. If you need more help take a look here

No, you can root and keep the stock rom. But if you want to install a custom rom, rooting is a prerequisite.

I'm happy with a black Speck cradle with a folding cover. Cover folds and clips back out of the way, or can be used in a number of other orientations for working, reading, etc.

I've also used a cover with a USB keyboard, which was also convenient if doing a lot of typing.

The Asus premium cover is awesome but it is pricey. I have the Asus travel cover, it doesn't have the sleep function but it does the job. Amazon and eBay has tons of them.
 
I got a cover from China, does its duty, no sleep function sadly but the next one will it's only like R80. The nice thing is that it has a stylus holder and 2 slots for 2 memory cards.
 
Thanks for the recommendations. I've always had good experiences with Speck as well.

Yeah, I needed a cover quickly, so I also got one from them and I'm happy with it. Sleep function works well, and doesn't trigger when the cover is folded back and clipped in place, as indicated in some reviews I read. I have a 2012 Nexus 7.
 
Meh, that HD screen on the 2013 model looks awesome. I bought my 2012 model on the day the 2013 model was announced, not that it made a difference really, because the 2012 model was available there and then at a good price.
