Official Google Nexus 7 Thread

Ok, so I also got my new Nexus today and busy playing with it at the moment. I just have a few questions:

1. What app do you use for streaming music or video to the Nexus?

2. Is there any app that is similar to Kies Air that I can use?

3. What version of SwiftKey must I use with Nexus, normal or tablet?

4. I am on 4.1.2 at the moment. Do you suggest I don't upgrade to 4.2 yet?

Cheerz

1. Local media?

3. I use the tablet version as it has a split keyboard function for landscape orientation. It was on sale recently, I'm not sure if it is still ongoing.

4. You might as well upgrade. I believe the 4.2 update could have been better, but it also brought some nice new functions to the device.

2. Airdroid

3. 4.2 have Android version of Swiftkey built-in

4. Upgrade - lots of extras, multi user profiles, new keyboard, revamped lockscreen and clock / timer amongst others

Thanks for the replies guys. Just to elaborate on number 1.

I have a home server at home. My son streams movies and music to his ipad from the home server using wifi. I want to do the same with my Nexus. What apps do I need?

I have XBMC with UPnP enabled installed on my server, and this client on my tablet https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp&hl=en

You can also use Plex apparently http://www.plexapp.com/ https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5wbGV4YXBwLmFuZHJvaWQiXQ..

I use

BubbleUpnp : this can access any dlna/upnp server on your network. It can act as a dlna SERVER itself too (streaming content located on your nexus). You can use any video player to play, i use mx player (you might want to try a few video players here, especially if it stutters or lags, some players handle certain codecs better) . To top it off you can also tell it to play the content on another device (i.e xbox), hence it can act as a remote between pc and xbox too.

Obviously you can download the files locally from the server instead of streaming too via the app. This applies to music, video, photos usually. So it can serve as file share and copy tool too.

There is also app called MediaHouse that can access dlna/upnp servers, but minus the server part of bubble.

As for file sharing, i use app called ftp server pro. This creates ftp server on my device and then you just need ftp client on pc or other device and then you copy easy. I use app called X-plore on android, which is a file manager with built in ftp, dropbox, picasa, etc etc support.

how is the case? worth the price?

Well my order with first tech was terribly disappointing. I ordered last week Friday and only after phoning and fighting did the delivery finally take place yesterday. They made a mistake apparently and did not pack the pouch. So still waiting for that.

They also did not give me the tracking number for the delivery.

One mess to the next. At least I have the nexus now.

Will let you know once I get the cover, but not really holding my breath.

Been using the nexus for about a day now. Smooth and snappy. Running android 4.2 it updated right out of the box.

Have not used a ton of apps yet but so far they all seem fairly well designed for the nexus.
Skype however is terrible with only landscape mode. I suppose if you have a Bluetooth keyboard that would be less of a issue.

Now to figure out what apps are worth purchasing.

Any recommendations for board game type games? Something that will keep two people occupied at the same time?

Also the swipe style keyboard is great. Is there a way to set the default language? Would love Afrikaans.

isnt it only the 3g models that need approval

Must say i love the form factor. I also have an ipad, and already feel mire comfortable lugging along my nexus when i go out.

Whats the best ebook reader for the nexus 7? Preferably something that compares favourably to iBooks.

As in app? I use the kindle app. You just need to copy your ebooks (that did not come from amazon) into the kindle folder and the app will pick it up. Kindle does however need it in either pdf, mobi or kindle format. I use an app called calibre on my pc to convert books that is not in those formats (there is probably an android app for that too) .

Obviously you then have access to all of amazons ebooks too, hence an ebook store. If you bought from amazon those books are on your account and available in the app on any device. Best of both worlds.

As for comparing to ibooks, i would think kindle is #1, ibooks somewhere behind that ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I'm not willing to spend the time converting all my epubs to something the kindle app can handle.

I'm talking about apps not stores. ;)

I know when i look into this awhile back, i ended up with the KOBO app for epubs, but it wasn't giving me as much as joy as the Kindle app.

EDIT: Scratch that, Kobo still sucks. I use Aldiko for any other format . It "just works" . Kobo tends to be too fancy and requires you to log in to do anything. If you are looking for the full "eco system + store + recommendations" effect, then Kobo is a good option (i use Kindle for this purpose).

either way up to you, if you don't come right, here's an android app to do the conversion with: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.ebookconverter
