OFFICIAL HTC Desire Thread

Hi guys and gals
I must upgrade end of this month. What should I take Desire or Desire HD. Will I be able to do on the Desire what the rest is doing on Desire HD.
I can afford both, but if I can shave off a few bucks on something that can do everything the other can do.....

If you root the Desire it can pretty much do anything, the HD would just obviously look nicer with the bigger screen! What would have been the decider for me is the HD is massive (IMO), way to bulky for me, so I would take the normal Desire if this was my choice.

The screen cracked, not the outside glass piece but the screen itself. The phone can still charge and appears to be starting up fine an as far as I can tell only the screen has been damaged.
Anyone know what the cost of a new screen is?

RIP Desire...

As I write this the tears are pouring down on my keyboard. I was having a good old braai in Jeffreys this holiday when it started to rain. My Desire was in my pocket. When I got inside and took my Desire out the screen was frozen, so I took out the battery. Tried switching it back on. Nothing.

Took it to Vodacom and yes you have guessed it, liquid damage. This irritates the $h*t out of me, because the watermarks inside my Desire are still white. After a bit of research on the net, it seems that the earphone jack and speaker of the Desire is the achillies heel of the phone. So be warned, don’t be a fool, wrap your tool... when its raining.

Anyone in the market to sell their Desire?

Damn that sucks man! What did vodacom say, is there no way that they can repair it? The reason I am asking is, about 2 weeks ago I dropped my phone in the sink just after helping my gran with the dishes. I opened it up and saw that the indicators are indeed pink and googled for a bit, I then put the phone and battery in a large bowl of dry white rice (this was the remedy that kept coming up on google) for 72 hours.

To my surprise, it worked without any hick-ups, I am still using my Desire and I don't have any problems with it since that day! It was in the water for around 2 - 3 seconds, don't know if the small amount of time was what saved it for me.

You are lucky and I must say I hate you. My Desire probably got 1 DROP of water and busted. Vodacom's official word is, Uneconomical to repair. My Desire is currently at HTC and I am awaiting a quote to see if i am prepaired to fix it. At own cost. I would think that should anything now happen to your Desire, they would say the warranty is void.

PS - also tried the rice thing.

Yeah I figured it was just luck. Lost other phones to the same thing... I would not hold my breath for HTC, would probably be some ridiculous price to fix, and it won't be the same again. but yeah my warranty is void, all the screw seals and stuff are broken :P (bought a case so I don't need to send it in ever) lol
 
Yes, running Gingerbread Oxygen ROM. Personally its the best ROM I have used so far, battery is amazing compared with others I have used. Only real issue that still haunts the Gingerbread ROMs is the video recording, but I don't mind that, and I think that is the only reason it is still in RC stage.

There is nothing keeping anyone glued to Froyo as far as I am concerned. (unless you really need video recording of course)
 
Thanks. I have a N8 I can use for the video recording. So maybe I will give this a try.
Some questions.
Do I have to make a "Goldcard" to return to original if anything fails or just a backup? If so do I need a second memory card then?
Do I need to format the memory card?
I read there are some issues using Win7 64 bit when rooting, any advice?
 
No I think you'll find a better answer on google or maybe somebody else here. I know a backup won't work, but I have no idea if you need a GC or anything like that. Just check some unrooting guides, I am sure you will find your answer. I did not have trouble with 64bit Win7 although I also read of other guys getting issues.
 
Rooted my HTC Desire and installed DJ Droid ROM. Loving it. :) Looks like if you can root that is the only option.
 
Just a follow-up on one of my previous posts, Just got the call from HTC to repair my beloved Desire's liquid damage, R688.50. Yes please... Just hope my baby comes back without any scars...
