Don't need to change hboot, I'm on 1.54 and happily run Google edition ROMs and sense ROMS.

I've successfully upgraded from 4.2 to 4.3 Sense 5.5 yesterday afternoon. For those that want the update before going to kitkat or flashing Google play edition (losing Sense, ZOE, FM Radio, Blinkfeeds etc), here's how I did it:

1. Unlock bootloader.
http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader

2. Root phone

3. Use rumrunner (my hboot version is 1.54) to s-off phone
http://rumrunner.us/

4. Download 4.3 Sense 5.5 OTA update:
http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/ota_m7_...-24-401-8_release_338160gxmo5sd9337kadux-zip/

5. Save downloaded file to phone.
6. Boot to stock recovery.
7. When red triangle with "!", e.g /!\, hold power button + volume up to enter blue recovery screen. Select zip file and flash.
8. Profit.

When you unlock your bootloader it wipes your phone. What methods did people use to do a full backup without root before unlocking? I tried the ADB backup tool but apparently it's spotty for the One and it didn't seem to work for me. I could use Helium but it only backs up user apps and I don't feel like wiping then realising that I've lost all my notes, etc.

+1 For this. Very helpful.

Just one question are you using cwm/twrp or just stock? Might seem like a stupid question but want to be sure before I do it :)

Used HTC sync to backup messages etc. Didn't back up apps, but copied my pictures music and whatsapp folder (all the media I needed). Didn't mind losing all the other stuff (phone is cleaner anyways :p)

I'd suggest google to find how to back up your apps, setting etc, but I figured a clean install would be better for me.

Not a stupid question.
I installed TWRP. Although I had to flash the recovery file I found in the new downloaded ROM zip files (recovery.img in the firmware zip) I linked earlier.

Had to flash the recovery file because TWRP cannot install this update. I tried, and got an error. You have to have the stock recovery file flashed to install the 4.3 Sense 5.5 update.

EDIT: I haven't had to reflash TWRP because I don't need it for now. Using stock recovery. I can reflash it whenever I want.

Ok. You kinda lost me. Just want to make sure. Can I do all of the steps with the stock or do I need twrp?

Also on a side note what is the purpose of the recover.image? Sorry for all the newbish questions.
The whole custom recovery applications is kinda confusing.

No prob.

Your phone needs to have stock recovery for you to be able to install the update.

A recovery image is basically just software that allows you to install ROMs. The reason you need a stock image (HTC's own recovery file) and not a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM is because the update is from HTC, and not a custom update. (This is my understanding) Using TWRP will be unsuccessful.

When you get to step 5 you'll probably have TWRP as a recovery. You then need to flash a stock recovery image for your HTC to be able to recognize and install the update.

Can I do all of the steps with the stock or do I need twrp?
I followed THIS GUIDE til "Step 3: Root". It shows that you'll need to flash the TWRP recovery at some point.

I then did my step 3 to step 8:
3. Use rumrunner (my hboot version is 1.54) to s-off phone
http://rumrunner.us/

It was my first time and I did it all without an issue (following expert guides of course).

To unroot download "One all in one kit 3.1" search on Google for it, boot to bootloader, open exe in Kit, connect phone to pc with cable and select unroot command from kit interface, this kit does all sorts of other things to, perfect companion for the One.
