Official ICC 2015 CWC thread

Big bash cricket is not the same as international cricket. In international cricket he averaged 19 with the bat and 40.50 with the ball.

To put this in context Wayne Parnell has better stats...

He's been the captain of South Australia for a few years (Just handed it to Head), and played all forms of cricket there. Not just BBL.

Arafat Sunny to Ali, OUT, given plenty of flight as Ali advanced down to try and create a single through the leg side. Ali thinks a run is on offer as he takes a couple of steps, before seeing the fielder pickup the ball and position himself for a throw at his end. Bell was guilty of ball watching as Ali tries desperately to get back, and adds the dive for good measure, but the throw is just too good. Really silly way to get yourself out as the risk really wasn't worth the reward in the end. Big wicket that for Bangladesh
MM Ali run out 19 (21b 3x4 0x6) SR: 90.47

Never a kind way to end an outing.

The first of 10. I am quietly elated. I have had little to cheer in recent times.

Bangladesh 275/7 (50.0 ov)
England 48/1 (9.0 ov)
England require another 228 runs with 9 wickets and 41.0 overs remaining

England RR 5.33
Required RR 5.56

Yup...you are my target McT

Why not Duminy?
Hes cool and calm, bats and bowls...
Why cant Duminy be captain?

Also WTF is Duminy, our 3rd best and most experienced batsmen doing at number 7??
He is far better than Faf, Miller and Rousouw.
JP would make a great captain I think, but he's not even treated as a senior player. NO matter how much he's accomplished, if Amla was called an AA Test captaincy appointment despite being arguably our best player, what more JP who's been our best T20 batsman, and third best Test&ODI batsman? He wasn't even considered for T20 captaincy which kept being passed between AB&Faf. It'll never happen. Only way It can happen is if we lose our first knock out match making it our third failure in a row against decent opposition after IND&PAK, and AB is rightly fired or resinged(which I suspect he will). But I have a funny feeling they'll "Ask" Amla to take over i fthat happens. Chances of JP being captain are very slim.

As for him batting so low, I've asked that question and commented on it many times! We've basically wasted his career. Miller of all people is batting aboe him now, and Rilee! Who would've thought! Again chances of him batting higher a slim. Several coaches, commentators, analysts long labelled JP our finisher. And he's always done well. Averages in the 60s when we win. Until AB's recent resurgance, JP was the man who got the job done in the end most of the time. It would be unlikely to promote our long designated finisher above AB, so it won't happen. Especially becaus ehe has another tag to his name "JP bats well with the tail". The popular excuse CSA figures use when someone wonders out loud why JP bats so low. ;)

I would love to see us line up as Amla, AB, JP. Or stick Reeza in there if no one wants to open with Amla. Clearly Faf&Rilee(understandably) don't look so keen otherwise QdK would've been put out of his misery by now.

Concerns about England and spin, yet they have Root who bats lower and does well against them. Not sure if the English know their players. I think the presence of KP amounted to their top 7. Didn't bother about much else. Yet even KP struggeld against spin. No?

Sree: "Frankly, this chase should be right up england's alley. Less than 6rpo and mostly non-threatening bowling. If they can't chase this, then Ireland should replace them in the next world cup."
:D

If anything, JP deserves to captain one of the sides, maybe T20.

We a joke to let JP bat at 7. No other team would do that to a player like JP.

Welcome to SA. I never once saw Makhaya in a strategic huddle with the captain and bowler.

But statistically, over the last few years Faf has done well overall. His average, strike-rate, 50&100 count etc, have been on par with JP. So statistically the CSA leadership can can argue why Faf has batted higher. Where I think we'll have a problme is Miller(&Rilee) batting higher than JP. That one is baffling. But like broken record, the make up of our batting order is at the mercy of AB's wishes. If he doesn;t mind batting at 3, then maybe they'll let JP bat at 5 at least.

The reality is our 3 best batsmen are Amla, AB&JP. The idea is to separate them with at least one batsman(two in the case of openers) so the highest JP can ever bat with this strategy is 6. Amla, ?, ?, AB, ?, JP. ;)

England crawling a bit. Would like to see the required rate above 7 after about 25-30, and see if they can cope.

Hoping they won't.

He's captained the T20 side before. He is probably 4th in line for the captaincy behind AB, Amla and Faf.

He's been bloody unlucky with injuries and had that serious Achilles heal injury that put him out for 7 months was it? Think that's possibly set him back a bit in terms of the team dynamic!

He doesn't generally bat at 7 either. 50% of his games he comes in at 5 and 83% of the time he's been used at 4/5/6. He is so versatile that regardless of the match situation, he can be used to consolidate or attack. He's comfortable in this role and comes in where match conditions dictate he should come in.

Has he ever been used to open? Don't think so! That seems a bit strange?? Wonder if he would be any good?

Mashrafe Mortaza to Hales, OUT, Mashrafe has the final laugh as Bangladesh pickup a wicket out of nowhere. Gets Hales to offer an outside edge which deflects away to the keeper, who takes it comfortably in the end. Bangladesh really needed that wicket as their body language started to lag a bit over the last few overs
AD Hales c †Mushfiqur Rahim b Mashrafe Mortaza 27 (34b 4x4 0x6) SR: 79.41

Bangladesh 275/7 (50.0 ov)
England 103/2 (21.4 ov)
England require another 173 runs with 8 wickets and 28.2 overs remaining

England RR 4.75
Required RR 6.10

They are doing what the Proteas can't seem to do - manage their chase. They don't need to take risks- keep the RRR at about 6 an over, don't take any risks and make sure they have wickets in hand for the last 15 when they pick up the pace.

Agreed. Proteas are pathetic in chasing. I seriously hope we win the toss in every knockout game we play.

How do you make a guy captain, when he spends more time getting injured during practice than he does playing?

Rubel Hossain to Bell, OUT, shows just how damaging pace can be when you bowl in the right areas as he removes the Big Kahuna, who was looking to skip down and slap the bowler through the covers, before feeding an outside edge to the keeper behind. Ends a wonderful guiding hand as England now face a bit of pressure for the first time in this chase
IR Bell c †Mushfiqur Rahim b Rubel Hossain 63 (82b 7x4 0x6) SR: 76.82

Rubel Hossain to Morgan, OUT, Rubel has become the star for these Bangladeshi masses as he gets Morgan to fall for the leg-side trap, sending in a short delivery which Eoin sends with a hook over to fine leg, who runs to his right before snapping this with both hands just over the rope as this was destined to go over for a maximum. Morgan departs without a run to his name, and England now in some trouble
EJG Morgan c Shakib Al Hasan b Rubel Hossain 0 (3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Morgan's poor form continues. I feel for him. He was thrown a hospital pass by the ECB.
