Official ICC 2015 CWC thread

Perhaps he felt the need to go big or go home today as it could likely be his last game in ODI's?

nope, its his mentality. he's created this perception of BOOM BOOM Afridi. problem is that it only last for 10-15 balls. he doesn't play circumstances EVER, beause he is BOOM BOOM Afridi.

How many of the NZ players would be good enough to make the SA team?

We're gonna differ on that, and then you'll accuse me of being wrong, and I'll accuse you of being wrong. What will that bring us, except mudslinging?

Either way, we don't have any control over the players available. We can just hope for the best.

They thumped us in the pre-World Cup warm-up match, and Tahir went for 52 runs and 0 wickets, in 7 overs. Other bowlers were expensive as well. Dale Steyn didn't play, though, but he's not even our best bowler at the moment anyway.

That's what worries me. :erm:

Are we really going to base things on friendly warmup games...Scotland would have beaten NZ if the rain hadn't saved them in the one warmup game.

a Much better indicator is the fact that we beat them 2-0 in the odi series in NZ last year, would have been 3-0 and a series whitewash if the rain hadn't intervened.

Yip, i actually rate Philander a better batsman.

You obviously haven't seen his ODI batting record.

In tests, without a doubt. But he's never batted well in ODI's. I'm guessing he struggles with upping the pace to a run a ball, which is required in ODI's.

That was quite long ago. If you go 2 months back, India wouldn't even have made the quarter finals.

And no, Scotland nearly beat West Indies. They didn't play against New Zealand in the warm-ups.

New Zealand made hard work of the Scotland game in the group stage, though, because they were chasing nett run rate.

Sorry it was Zimbabwe in the warmup games.

Aus off to a flyer.

** edit: and just as I posted that - Wicket A Finch out LBW Sohail Aus 15/1 after 2.3

Yes, typical Afridi innings.

1) Exactly on his all time average of 23
2) Three 4's and a miskewed 6...18/23 bit above his all time average of 14/23

Absolutely no responsibility when required. Never has he shown that. When it has come off, everybody hails him, but drill into the stats and he is a slogger that would not have played 400 games if not for the spin he provides.

Yet he is said to be better than AB who often shows restraint when necessary, is able to manufacture shots to everywhere...not wild slogs, and often starts 'slow' (first 30 of 162 was about 20 balls out of 62)
Afridi's rubbish, period. Today is a perfect example. 16 overs to go, power play looming and its slog, slog, slog. Slog slog Afridi, poor form, poor technique.

He's a bowling all rounder, very little more. Aussies barely celebrated his wicket. His wicket is a given.

It's an insult to compare him to AB. He's more of a Ryan Mclaren or a Albie Morkel.
but but but Afridi and Gayle are the most celebrated wickets in the world. opposition know how valuable their wickets are :erm:
It's silly to continue to fire neatly laced potshots stretching pages, yet go on to pretend to disregard the owner of the original comment. I thought that infected the forum, yet you're clearly doing fine by youselves. Heck the thread already reeks of the "negativity" stench despite the fact that NZ aren't even through to the SFs yet! Somehow someone will find a way to give me credit for that in my absence.

Afridi has never said he's a batsman. I've never said that either, and no one would compare his batting to any genuine top&middle order batsman. Nonetheless, he remains by far the most popular cricketer ever on this earth, and the most valuable cricketer to ever grace the game. Not even the India-Pakistan animosity could dim that fact. Overall, his arrival on the pitch and his dismissal have unmatchable aura. You don't have to agree with me fo rthis to be a fact. I think it's common knowledge to every cricketer. Shane Warne, Sachin, McGrath, Wasim etc have all taken the back seat to Afridi, it's the same for Gayle, AB&Malinga today. The Indians love their cricketers, but those same adoring fans love Afridi!

Shahid Afridi - I am a bowler first and then a batsman

Shahid Afridi - "I have always insisted over the last three years that bowling is my strength and batting comes second, and it's a plus if it works."

You guys are arguing against nothing. Stating th ebleeding obvious. Maybe you're confusing this and comparing AB to Afridi. I think if you were to even try and tell AB that he's as popular as Afridi or as much a star as Afridi he would laugh at you hard!

Yeah, it has a nice ring to it doesn't it? Boom boom Afridi! Marketers have jumped on it! But just like Spur, strip away the marketing and its a crap product but just like with Spur your suckers will endorse it...

Yep we quite entitled to make general comments based on what has been 'put out there', and can compare him to AB based on contribution to game, plus the value of his wicket...all things that have been stated on this forum...not asking for your feedback thanks, we already know what it is.

Afridi is not the most popular cricketer on earth, never has been, if that were the case he would be worth $30M not Dhoni, and before that Tendulkar.

He's worth 32 million

Just looked at their batting scorecard. They're welcome to perform like that against us as well. :D

But every match after that they've looked like a top team, so it's gonna be more difficult.

Our openers must try and survive the Boult/Southee new ball onslaught. Boult took a fiver against us in the warm up game.

This is why I don't understand the obsession some have with seeing QDK failing?! Unless they have alterer motives? Any true fan, not only of the Proteas, but the game of cricket, would want to see a flourishing opening pair of Amla/QDK. Imagine the 2 of them playing to their full potential for the next 2 games??? Will be devastating for NZ/Oz but a real treat for spectators.
