Official ICC 2015 CWC thread

I can't decide whether I'd rather bat second or first. It's always risky setting the score to start with, especially if you're going to be conservative.

Agreed. Would be happy if we were 45-55 without loss after 15.

Also what's a good score at Eden Park? It's a small ground but not a high scoring ground, especially if the ball is swinging. 250 batting first could be a winning score!

55 after 15? no way, we setting ourselves to fail. I'd want another 15 runs on that after 15...

Not forgetting what if we chase. I'm guessing they'll make about 350, and we have to be ready mentally to chase that.

Of course we've got the players, but we must not be more than 90 away from whatever the target is after 40, with at least 7 wickets in hand, because scoreboard pressure can be a bitch. Totally different mentality compared to setting a target - we've seen this twice already this world cup.

If they bat first and make 350, I doubt SA will chase it...

I'd want them restricted to a total of 270/280.

Don't think a team has chased more than 230 for victory at Eden Park so we mustn't go out there with a 300+ minimum mindset if we bat first. Even if we are 50/2 after 15, a consolidation is still definitely necessary and making sure there are wickets in hand towards the last 10/15 overs.

Should be a great game.

The team batting first would be happy with a score of around 250!

I reckon SA might battle chasing down a score of anything more than 220-230 against the likes of Boult/Southee/Vettori.

Same applies to NZ!

Batting first a score of 220 would be par. 250+ would be most likely be a winning total!

EDIT: Apparently the expected weather conditions are unlikely to support swing bowling so we unlikely to see a sub 180 total set by whichever team bats first.

I'm kinda hoping we lose the toss. That way it is out of our control and we must man up and make the best of it like we did the last game. On the other hand we have been brilliant setting totals of late so winning the toss selecting to bat seems the way to go.

If NZ bats first they will be under quite some pressure as well. What target to set? How agressive to go at it?

I want and expect the boys to start strongly tomorrow. the last thing we need is to be caught behind the 8 ball and playing catch up for the rest of the game.

If we bowl first, get early wickets, keep the runs down and apply pressure.

If we bat first, lay a foundation and go at a steady pace with acceleration at the end.

We can't let them gain the momentum of the match IMO.

keep them under the pump as long as possible and they will crack and faulter. same could be said of us, that's why start well!

just saw the weather forecast, early morning showers expected but should clear up before play begins. Could make the first hour all the more tricky if its overcast, if thats the case, the toss could be quite relevant.

Well, statistically the team batting 2nd wins 55% of the time vs 37% batting 1st.

Re Eden Park and scoring - there's been a 280 that was chased comfortably, a 150 run game that could have gone either way, a 220 that was defended comfortably (I only put stock in the results from the World Cup since anything earlier is unquantifiable - pitch, weather, fielding restrictions may have been significantly different).

So what to make of it? This looks like a high-scoring ground if your bowling is average and a low-scoring ground if your bowling unit is on it from the start...duh.

All in all, this ground won't decide the result...it's the performance by the team on the day.

100%. Whatever we end up doing, we must execute. NZ and Aus are teams that once you give them a look, they can use it to take the game away from you.
