Official ICC 2015 CWC thread

That is just 'dog whistling' and hoping there is some truth to it so that they can blame the 'system'.

The following is more likley and what I have been saying as well:

I will exclude the rain and DLS because you have to work around that and it affects every team (and both teams here, and besides AB ought to have known- would have- that it was going to rain for as long as it did).

On the Eden Park pitch they needed more swing, not pace. Boult swings a lot but only bowls low to mid 130's. This is what Vern brings to party. The question is then do they take the 'easy' option and replace the guy who substituted him when he was injured, or look at the reality and know that Steyn never swung anything in CWC and is straight up and down outside off which works well for him in tests. They were never going to drop Steyn for Vern/Abbott so what to do? They were sitting there contemplating "we need swing , we need swing or we are screwed" That is why Vern was brought back, besides been able to clout the ball if required.

When all is said and done they lost not due to DLS, Vern vs Abbott etc- but the fact that their main strike bowler did not control the game at the outset. Withe Vern you could half expect that the odd ball not swinging will get clouted, that's the risk. With Steyn, he was not adapting, no variation "You just hit me for 6..I will bowl the same ball faster then".

Then at the death, he still hasnt learnt. Gives Vettori backing off a nice juicy ball outside off to jab for 4--seriously Vettori didnt even have to hit it. Why doesnt he bowl at the feet I have no idea. Then he just bowls as fast as possible to Elliot, nice juicy volley "thank you very much, the faster it comes the less effort I need to put it in row 17"

And besides all of that...it is wishful speculation to think that Abbott would not have been clouted out of the attack even more than Steyn, by McCullum

Hindsight is also a perfect science. I dont, think anyone would have protested too much against an Abbott inclusion even if we have lost though.

Steyn: Yes he was disappointing but also a big risk not to select him who is supposed to be our strike bowler. Those two balls that went for 4 and 6 might as well been nicked or squirted to Morne and then he was the hero. Same can be said for Vern though or Rilee or AB with those chances.

Hindsight? mmmh, I said several times that the Protea bowling plus the long tail was going to stop them. The latter was one of reasons for Vern's inclusion too, though had Abbott been picked and clobberred as well , yes there wouldnt have been too much protest.

As for Steyn, he was taking stick several times in CWC and seemed less effective than usual. The way the guys bat in ODI these days mean that bowlers need to 'change, change , change' all the time. Adapt or be damned.

Those two balls deserved to go for 4 and 6 , no less. They were rubbish in those circumstances.

I heard from a very credible source that CSA was pretty pissed with the 'representation' in the quarters.

I'll be controversal and say the rain benefited SA in that it may have brought on Faf's premature dismissal. The way Miller played it was a good thing!

Yes swing is king yet Morkel was our most effective bowler! Abbott's pace and bounce would have served us well, as is reflected in his WC stats to date.

McCullum has hammered every opening bowler other than the Bangladeshi and Scottish openers. That's the only 2 times he has failed! Aus, England, SL, SA, they all traveled. Yes Steyn has been atrocious but at least he's had some support from the other end in Abbott and Morkel. Not only was Philander out of form but he carried a niggle into a Semi final with very little game time? No doubt in my mind his selection was not left entirely to the selectors. With 7 batsman selected I doubt his batting prowess would have been a motivating factor either.

For me, the dropped catches and missed run outs cost us. Elliot had 3 lives was it? And Anderson 1? Bowlers created chances, fielders didn't take them. And the rest is history...

Cricket World Cup: Martin Crowe says final could be his last match

Ex-New Zealand captain Martin Crowe says the Black Caps' World Cup final against Australia could be the last cricket match he watches.

The 52-year-old, who will be at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday, is battling cancer after his lymphoma returned in September.

"My precarious life ahead may not afford me the luxury of many more games to watch and enjoy," said Crowe.

"This is likely to be it. I can happily live with that."

Crowe, who is the second highest Test run-scorer in New Zealand history with 5,444 runs at an average of 45.36, captained the Kiwis in the 1992 World Cup which was also played in Australia and New Zealand.

Since then, Crowe has worked with some of the current crop of Black Caps players, including batsmen Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill, who made a staggering 237 off 163 balls in the quarter-final against West Indies.

It is the form of these two batting lynchpins which has boosted Crowe in his battle with illness.

"To see the two sons I never had, Ross Taylor and Marty Guptill, run out in black, in sync with their close comrades, drawing on all their resolve and resilience, will be mesmerically satisfying," he told Cricinfo.

"I will hold back tears all day long. I will gasp for air on occasions. I will feel like a nervous parent.

"If New Zealand win, for the very first time they will step out of the All Blacks' shadows. That is arguably the greatest feat of all.

"And yet it could be relatively short-lived, as the All Blacks will soon enough step back into the breach to defend their world rugby crown in England come September, and attempt to create an unprecedented triumph of the nation holding two World Cups at the same time, in the same year."

Crowe was diagnosed with follicular lymphoma two years ago but it went into remission. Late last year, however, a new, more aggressive form of the disease, double-hit lymphoma, developed and he said he had been told only 5% of sufferers survive more than 12 months.

He has decided against chemotherapy and is instead trying natural treatments.

Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum told a news conference on Saturday he had read Crowe’s column.

“What he’s going through at the moment is incredibly difficult. We had him involved in the group, and not long ago as well he came and spent time with the team and it was great,” McCullum said.

“He seems to have really found peace with himself and the game as well, and he’s been instrumental in helping some of our guys on the team peel back their games and really focus on being able to develop individually but also buy into the team collectively. He’s been a really big asset.

“It’s really sad what he’s going through and we just hope that he’s able to find some peace in the time that he’s got left.”

AB had a bunch of lives too don't forget.

True. A bunch? Wasn't it just the one dropped catch from Kane?

Sorry, meant the proteas - had AB on the brain. They dropped at least 3 significant catches including QDK, Amla and AB. AB also almost chopped the ball onto his stumps on his first ball.

Big Mac clean bowled by Starc for 1, and only a question of when he gets another one.

...Steyn and co, pay attention how to bowl to McCullum et al....what a 1st over from Starc, followed by steady stuff from Hazlewood.
