It's win win for me really. If Pool win, City are still within reach. If City win, I can just laugh at all the Pool supporters.

That said, a Pool victory will benefit United most. Will be very hard to catch City if they go 7 points clear.

Crystal Palace tonight should be a good game, seeing as the team has picked up its pace over the last two weeks. Still expecting a largely secondary/tertiary squad to play tonight. Would be nice to see Pogba and Morrison given at least 45 minutes, to try and establish themselves.

Im excited about those 2 but it seems other "not so touted" players always get the nod - the Fryers, Keanes, Brandy's etc...(not saying that they aren't any good but Pogba and Morrison have the most hype about them

Keane as well.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says that he will put his faith in youth for Wednesday's Carling Cup tie with Crystal Palace.

Fringe players like Darron Gibson, Mame Biram Diouf and Federico Macheda are set to make an appearance with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Nani - who all featured in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle at the weekend - given the night off.

But it will be Ferguson's young charges who take centre stage as Chris Smalling has recovered from a cracked bone in his foot and will line up alongside Zeki Fryers, 18-year-old Frenchman Paul Pogba and highly-rated fellow teenager Ravel Morrison.

"There will be complete changes," Ferguson said. "Chris Smalling has come back and I may be able to play him. He's still young and it'll be a young squad against Palace.

"The only area where I've got problems is centre midfield. It's possible I could play Pogba in there but we'll wait and see. I've got enough players to choose from, that's for sure."

Speaking about Morrison in particular, Ferguson called him a "very talented boy" and says he has benefited from training with the first-team over the past couple of months.

"He has taken part in a lot of the first-team training now with [Paul] Pogba and Larnell [Cole]," Ferguson said. "They enjoy the challenge and it's interesting to see what they are like in these sessions and how they cope with the older players. It lets me judge their temperament and allows me to get a far better picture of how they're progressing and, while this is going on, you hope they're playing well for the reserves and displaying the right attitude and enthusiasm."

United last won the League Cup in 2010 when they defeated Aston Villa at Wembley and Ferguson thinks it is an ideal place to blood young players.

"I think the League Cup has turned into quite a good tournament," he added. "Clubs like United are able to introduce young players and ones who have not been playing regularly in the first team, and it's been good to us over the years.

"We've won two finals at Wembley with young players, which is good going, and I think it's become an important tournament for us in terms of getting the youngsters an introduction into winning and having an understanding of the progress they're making."

Great stuff :)

Great, super excited for tonights game. If we start getting Pogba and Morrison ready, who knows by late this season they could be genuine competitors in our midfield, which is definitely our weakest area. Although our wings are good, its just the centre we struggle with.

Looks like City have spotted the excitement around Pogba:

City lie in wait as Pogba stalls on new deal

Manchester United fear they may lose their rising star Paul Pogba, a defensive midfielder recruited at great expense and effort from Le Havre two years ago, to their fierce rivals Manchester City as talks over a new deal for the 18-year-old hit an impasse. Pogba's current deal expires in the summer, allowing him to speak to suitors as early as January, and a number of clubs are believed to have registered an interest in the player, currently on the fringes of Sir Alex Ferguson's first-team squad.

He has so far failed to agree terms on an extended deal. But while Arsenal, Internazionale and Milan are all believed to be monitoring his progress, it is the prospect of losing the jewel in their crown to City – where Pogba's hero, Patrick Vieira, ended his career and now retains an important role in player recruitment – that would jar the most.

Geez if we lose him to City that will be super kak. I can genuinely see him as the next Vieira. He's got the same build as him and is a very smart player.

Flip I hope he starts getting more playing time.

Watched the full 90 minutes and decided to go to sleep afterwards as I wasn't impressed. Just had a feeling that Crystal Palace would clinch it in extra time. Oh well.

Diouf: most useless football player I have ever seen. Don't think he made one meaningful contribution the entire game. He needs to be sold asap.

Macheda: also poor. Can't dribble, has terrible ball control and loses the ball all the time.

Morisson: absolutely brilliant. Those little flicks he played to Park and Macheda are exactly what our midfield needs. He's definitely got the flare and creativity we need.

Pogba: had a pretty subdued game.

Smalling: absolute class. It's amazing how calm and collected he is on the ball. Not afraid to dribble out of trouble as well. Definitely going to be one of the best CB's in the world in a few short years.

That said, the only players who really came to play last night were Valencia and Morrison. The rest of the team (defenders excluded) didn't do much.

a little quiet in here

my condolences to all united fans. 1 trophy less to win
Thank you and yes 1 less trophy to win, sigh...we only have 3 TOP trophy's left to win...Goodluck in the CC, its your only chance :)

Just like I was telling you...and who gets a full game --> Gibson motherF**ker

Well Gibson is a EPL medal winner, so I don't understand why he would not play 90min in a Carling Cup match. :D

Was Owen on the bench at least? :p
